i didn't go nuts over DTS' sound on Vessel or the Onry Ozzborn album. It felt a little too slick, which made it a little too sterile sounding. I had the same problem with shit like cunninglynguists, blackalicious, and hell, even some later roots. the race of the artist doesn't come into play; it's a sound i dont dig

what ppl mean by white rap is that rap like cunninglynguists/mac lethal/immortal technique/el-p/pos/ is kind of gay

That grouping of artists makes no sense.

Adam/anyone else, you are perfectly free to not like something, just no need to sound ridiculous and call it white person rap

there are plenty of sociological reasons why calling something "white person rap" is problematic, but the concept of "white people rap" isn't a fantasy. the artists sam listed are better examples than the ones i thought up, but saying something "sounds white" still calls up a specific sound, and it's one i don't always dig. POS is pretty great though

seriously though (since joshuatree never came back), why does it matter what color the people who listen to and/or make the music are?

it don't.
Never understood why people around here get so worked up against hype trains. It's nice to see a staffer that doesn't hesitate to give music he loves a high score, and it's not like he doesn't sell his argument here.

Were you here in 2010? Everything was 5/5

i'm just confused why a dark time sunshine record is setting this off. go argue on an atmosphere thread or something

with this argument regarding newer "cloud" rap and the more progressive bent of groups like this, I fall into a never winning middle ground. I like the more almost shoegazy cloud beats more because hip hop is my chill out music, but the rapping on a lot of that stuff is just a lazy drawl that I don't really appreciate. While I love the rapping on this kind of hip-hop but the beats don't particularly do anything for me.

furthermore-- i really like "cloud rap" when it's done well but i think dts stuff shares a lot of similarities.. ozzborn's flow is really stream of consciousness and tracks like "run" have those chill, hazy beats you're referencing

what i'm trying to say here is i'm just surprised this group is considered to be closely related to el-p and company. i always found it tough to put them in a box

I really don't get why people are asserting that this is 'white person rap'. Some people are noting that this 'sounds white' and that it has a 'specific sound,' but they fail to explain that sound and how DTS fall into this category. What is it? Is it white people emceeing?

only logic i could see is that not as many black people go online looking for underground artists and therefore more white people are listening to these artists? i mean, it'd be pretty dumb making music for only one demographic if you're interested in making any kind cash

dts teases too much. i love their outro beats that come up out of nowhere but then they just end too quickly. overlordian ending in particular is great

Check out Void Pedal or Crushcon 7. Both on Fieldwerk (Zavala's old label I think?).
