I'm a huge fan of Fates Warning, Arch/Matheos, and early DT style prog metal, so this immediately appealed to me. So far it's my favorite release of 2012, the writing and performances are very impressive. Excellent review, I agree with pretty much everything stated. Pos'd.

Agreed, I'm surprised more people don't think it's a stellar album. And thank you, sir.

A lot of this was very good. Definitely get the DT comparison, but it reminded me of Shadow Gallery more than anyone else. Everything from the guitar riffs, use of keys, types of vocal melodies, and even the way it flows conceptually. The vocals were strong from both singers. I liked how the female vocals were mostly limited to the softer songs and sections. Seemed as though her voice suits that best. It's nice they played to each other's strengths rather than them just trading lines or making sure everything was split evenly.
My only real criticism is that from "The Struggle" onward, the music wasn't that great. Kind of lost interest from there until the final track came on. I think this should get better with repeated listens though (assuming the story concept was well written). I didn't pay all that much attention to the lyrics.
Also, @Willie & Horror: I don't see why this would appeal specifically to a Fates Warning fan. No similarity whatsoever to any era of that band. What made you mention that?

It seems like it's Images & Words meets Parallels, to me.
Edit: Without the perfection of either album, obviously.

Ha, obviously. Yeah, that would be the perfect album. That description definitely would make me check a band out every time.
Well, I'm with you on the Images & Words part. But the style of instrumentation, even on the on the softer material, is too different for me to draw any parallels to Fates. Very heavy on piano and keyboard-based sections and the vocal arrangements don't have a FW type of feel either. Plus, this is far too metal of an album overall to be compared to Parallels in particular.

I gave this a 3 just for the instrumentals. They're nice! I just didn't dig the vocals too much

Just listened to this again today. I'm thinking I'm gonna bump it up to a 3.5. I just can't see bumping it up more. I mean this album has it's strong points for sure, but for every few strong points, it has a weak point. The instrumentals in "Triumph of Irreality" are delicious though!

I used to laugh at "Where the Earth and Sky Meet," then after repeated plays I'm really starting to like it, although I can see Aladdin singing it on the flying carpet.
Sorry for blowing up this thread, I'm still trying to figure out this album. It's quite a grower for sure.
