when it comes to syntax, just say what you're writing out loud and if it's wrong it will sound weird in speech. go with what comes natural.

You're not referring to "team" in this case.
It's a bit like the difference between "We are a team" (not referring to team, but to we) and "The team has won" (in this case indeed referring to team).

Eh? If 'they' doesn't refer to the team of people kicking a ball around in order to beat the opposing team, to whom does it refer? They are the group of guys who, collectively, are known as Manchester United. Also, your example of 'Man U is a team' is grammatically perfect, it just refers to the common goal of the team, rather than the players themselves. The team can win, the team can do something 'as one' but the team are still a group of people.

The definition of a band is a group of people working together toward a common aim. A person making music alone is an artist, a musician. Unless he or she split into separate entities to make their album, soomehow becoming more than one person, he or she can't be a band.

Eh, this is hard to explain in English, but what I tried to say with "referring to team or not" is looking whether the word "team" is actually the subject (if that's the correct term?) of the sentence. I just tend to look if the subject(?) is a singular or plural word and then adjust my verb to that.
If this makes sense...

when you refer to the band name, you refer to the members collectively so you say "are"
when you refer to the band itself (ex. the band is planning to tour soon) as opposed to saying Love
American are planning to tour soon, you refer to a singular entity so you say "is"
