Some people use it as an excuse to serve. Clearly this guy isn't, but still.

"Some people use it as an excuse to serve. Clearly this guy isn't, but still."
However 'serving' is something positive.

People who do mission work do positive things. Good still comes out of their flawed reasoning for doing it.

"first time me and andcas agree, fuck"
you're like the 10th user to say that this week.

I was talking more general. Since "serving" is somewhat/almost synonumous with doing things without thinking. Serving the the British Empire, serving the German Reich, serving Hitler, serving for your country - the whole 'chain of command' story.
Now mind you, I'm not trying to generalize this here. Just saying there is a negative association possible. Also, in case you're not up to speed there's also a lot of shit happening out of "good intentions" - especially in terms of trying to help "less advanced countries". (ruining nomadic trade in African deserts => them moving further South mowing down native black farmers, interfering with systems that balanced themselves out => overpopulation/scarce food, interfering with cultures..)

I was talking about volunteering on an individual level, or why an individual would do it. Of course, when superpowers help "less advanced countries" it's usually for some sort of personal gain, the clearest example still being the US Military's involvement in the Middle East, which has turned out to be our biggest national fuck-up since Vietnam.
|
| |
Some of the things I listed weren't necessarily any superpowers or anything of the like but either way I agree with the whole volunteering on an individual level. All I'm sayin' anyway is be wary of these things. Easy to tread down the way of the slippery slope.

Exactly. I've thought about the Peace Corps and whatnot. What are they spending much of their time doing? Teaching English. Bogus.
|
| |
It still makes me cringe when some people think an Afghan farmer who doesn't know jackshit about what any Western troops want from him are "sympathizing with terrorists". They probably wouldn't even understand them properly if they spoke English - or knew anything of relevancy.
|
| |
Personally I like how we call people defending their land in Afghanistan 'terrorists'. We call the same people in America 'patroits'.
|
| |
Eh, I don't think it's that easy while I can understand your point and the principle you're hinting at. The more appropriate term would be "guerrilla fighters", 'cause let's be honest you can't fool anyone into thinking this isn't a guerilla war anymore.
