Agreed with Doof - ILYH is intentionally divisive, delivered with that air of sarcasm and humor it was never going to be everybody's cup of tea. However I always found it a work of genius, the arrangements are superb throughout, I love his voice, the melodies are great, there's a decent amount of variety particularly for a singer/songwriter sort of deal.
This one has hints of that but the songwriting isn't quite up to snuff for the most part.

You watch him live and the contrast is as clear as day - new stuff good, old stuff (barring two songs) weak

Doof I did love this back at release, though at that point it was one of the first 50-100 albums I'd really given attention to so there's a bit of ignorance/nostalgia working there. It's grown off me since though.

7/10 is a pretty strong rating for me, half of these songs are great and there's nothing bad here.
'Hollywood', 'Ladiesman', 'Funtimes', 'Novel' and 'Hatchet' are well written and tasteful stuff, just seems a bit timid and reverential to me when compared to what was to come on the next album.
This is the album he wanted to do good by the masters. The next one is where he decides he IS one of the masters (you can't deny his confidence).

Yeah first four songs here are all really great. This album seems kind of forgotten which is sad. Certainly better than God's Favorite Customer.
