There's a few sweet really heavy parts but alot of it feels like forced backwash. They just need to get good at being all out heavy again, it's like they don't even want to be a metal band anymore so they can be popular. I don't really think it's a style so much as he just can't scream as good as he used to, or he just doesn't want to push his voice as hard. He had singing lessons around the recording of THAN, so maybe it wasn't sustainable.
