Really enjoyed that review, summed the album up perfectly. I think the progression you described from Swoon to this album is pretty similar to the progression from Carnavas to Swoon - less immediate but deeper. Think Carnavas is still my favourite, can't get over that shit.

I like the dark tone and feel, but it's way too bloated in that aspect.
Swoon was better than Carnavas
Carnavas was better than Neck of the Woods
Swoon & Carnavas were both better than Neck of the Woods
I've listened to the new album about 20 times, but it's definitely their weakest.
Busy Bees, Here We Are, and Dots and Dashes are good songs, though.
