Alex: Yeah, those criticisms seem a little scathing and unprofessional - especially the one about the actress' weight. I was referring more to critics saying it's a failed adaptation to a different medium, and their gripe with the acting/overuse of cliches seems acceptable.

i think the adaptation was great. it's always hard to adapt a book into a movie but they seemed to have done it really really well. i didnt feel like anything was missing and it, though long, it didnt feel really bloated to me. there were probably cliches but they didn't stick out to me? idk it was just really good to me

and yeah there was a romance i guess but i don't really have a problem with that in and of itself (romance?!?!?! must be GOING TWILIGHT!) and plus the romance had deeper implications i think, considering that it meant more than just the two of them (i liked how you weren't entirely sure whether or not the romance was a machiavellian move to win the game on the part of lawrence's character. i mean you can see the genuine feeling but still, it adds a nice shading)

@Sowingseason

Near the end, the movie does a complete 180 in tone. Instead of focusing on the idea of survival and children having to murder eachother, it instead decides to try to suddenly lay on this deep and passionate love relationship. It feels completely forced, and doesn't fit the movie well at all. I still like the movie, but that direction it took seemed as if it was done just to attract a more twilight esque fanbase.

well of course it's not about survival and children trying to murder each other toward the end

cuz they, like, won the hunger games. that part's over

i mean i guess i see what you're saying but it doesn't seem "forced" insofar as their relationship has already been budding and now that they have won the games the plot organically allows for the "relationship" stuff to set in. which may not be your bag, but it's not like it's a ploy

i sort of wish they just got rid of gale

i don't know what his role is in the next stuff but it seems like it's gonna be sort of lame

I guess forced was the wrong word since the relationship was basically allowed to progress and evolve throughout the film, but when the romance does become the focus of the film for its' characters, it doesn't work well. This is mainly because the writing takes a nosedive, and the actors still don't seem mature enough to handle the material.

Lady is indeed hot. Good review SS; this compilation sounds interesting BUT soundtracks like these aren't really my thing (prefer albums proper, which at least have some unifying consistency to them). Have to admit that the list of contributing artists is amazing though.

Also: Arcade Fire abandons their grandiose personality

I'm actually quite unsure whether a band is a singular or plural noun (I usually take it as plural), BUT you appear to conjugate it both ways here. Either go "Arcade Fire abandons its grandiose personality" or "Arcade Fire abandon their grandiose personality"; my two cents =)

Twilight had Paramore's song Decode, and some Muse song, both of which I thought were decent but not really my style. I kind of walked out of the theater when he started sparkling so I can't say much about the entire soundtrack...

But I watch movies like Harry Potter and the superhero movies almost solely for the cinematic soundtracks. Bringing in all these popular bands seems to be part of this new 'hyped movie' trend from Twilight to Juno (the more hipster version). Call me a close-minded anti-hipster hipster. Or something.

However. I really shouldn't bash the movie so much since I've only read the first two books. If there was more substance besides action and a skeletal structure of a dystopia, I'd respect them more. But I can see it being satisfying to someone not looking for anything more than a suspenseful story. It's not the go to movie or series for commentary on world hunger, is all.
