Okay, I'm just doing this post to get it out of my mind. I don't expect anyone to read it or whatever, but I need closure. Obviously I'm talking about your metal statement. I'm not siding with some other acounts proclaiming metal as the "most experimental" genre ever, that's just as inane as the first paragraph. The thing is: that paragraph came over as a rather higher-than-thou rant. It's that mentality some people indeed may have, those mainly listening to mid-heavy progressive-tinted bands. Somehow that part was hailed as truthful and it seemed to me most well-respected people here considered it an intellectual thing to say. I'm quite baffled by the closemindedness on this thread of a paragraph that immediately started with a sentence that bothered me the most. It started with a description of why you don't (didn't?) like metal. Ironically you considered yourself a open-minded person and followed that by disliking the whole metal genre, for stereotypical reasons no less. Of course it's all up to you to dislike whatever you want, but the idea behind it was atrocious. The explanation was meager and full of stereotypes. Strangely it was well picked up by other respectable members of sputnikmusic. I'd thought at least 1 person here would have the rationality to disagree and the intelligence to explain. But the few people that raised eyebrows were blown to kingdome come, again with no explanation, for not-agreeing and failing to construct a single good statement. However, not was it only accepted, it was then compared to pop-punk as far as experimentation goes. Aside from the irrelevance (pop-punk is a very young subgenre, metal is not), it was approved with the "open minded" fellows of this site. Now it may be indeed stupid to make a fuzz about a mere 2 or 3 lines, but the content was quite bothering. The attitude given to metal and those who sided with it, along with the lack of respect, while showing a complete lack of knowledge was quite disturbing. It may be that you've already recognized your faults, especially since this review is almost 4 years old. I just hope not only you, but many people with the same musical taste as you (quite a lot of people like you (musical taste-wise) have a rather higher-than-thou view on metal and its fans) may realise how douchebaggery you can be. Oh and one thing:
Finally, a band that wasnt afraid to step so far out of the boundaries of metal that it didnt even sound like it anymore. Nice contradiction.

OMG that both guys with the low ratings talking shit bout Kayo Dot ---> THE FUCK OUT Clowns.. I am laughing bout you and your lousy favorite music...
the point about Dowsing is, so much potential here, sometimes it's as huge as Choirs and almost flawless, but sometimes it's not funny anymore and it's just a 3.5
problem songs are Gemini and Amaranth the Peddler(the King Crimson-Moonshine Syndrom)
___On limpid Form is the best to describe this phenomena, if you are in the right mood, it will fucking OWN your Ass, but sometimes you are getting tired and you will watch yourself skipping some parts...
got huge respect for this album though...

The vocals on Gemini Becoming the Tripod are some of the best I've ever heard. The way his singing just gets more and more intense just blows my mind every time.

yeah, but at times it's kinda too ambitious and annoying...
I simply can not fully appreciate Gemini and Amaranth the Peddler..
but sometimes I could and then it hits me hard, Gemini is sure not a bad or weak song, it's just fucking special... like stones october sobbing(LYBM), Amaranth The Peddler is in the second half kinda plain and going nowhere, I just don't get it(like I said in the upper post, The King Crimson-Moonshine Syndrom, not for everyone)

They're going to be recording the "Stained Glass" EP with the dude that recorded both this and COTE. Hopefully some nostalgia sets in and we get some real gems.

theres a lot of times on this album where there's nothing happening for 2-3 minutes at a time

yeah, usually the "nothing happening" parts are actually quite interesting. Probably the most interesting part of this album is just after the solo in ___On Limpid Form and before the dissonance, where the trumpets do the slides. That's crazy and not easy to play, at least not at that pitch.
Then again I don't always think this album succeeds at what it's trying to do.

This is why categorization of music bothers me so much. Kayo Dot is one of my absolute favorites, but the idea of calling them a "metal band" I think is very confining and not even close to accurate. Sure, they have metal-y parts, because at that given time it was what the music called for. But there are far more moments in their music that have no aspects of metal at all. In fact, the reason Toby Driver changed the name of his project from Maudlin of the Well to Kayo Dot was to escape the metal reputation they had inadvertently made for themselves.
