actually on second thought I don't like this review. The first paragraph is just bad in general but
the rest of this review just seems like a bunch of hyperbolic claim about how good it is and hardly
actually describes the music beyond saying it somehow has a more "hip-hop vibe" (which isn't really
true) and talking about some of the MJ influence on the first track (which is true). Oh and that
this is good. Definitely doesn't justify a 5 from a staff member.

oh, and Clams Casino doesn't make beats for bad artists. Main Attrakionz and Lil B (his two biggest
people he contributes to other than ASAP Rocky and Soulja Boy) are fantastic and some of the best in
the game right now, they just have an inaccessible style. Danny Brown's beats on his latest album is
great, his only "Lil Wayne" imitation is how he makes out-of-proportion claims (in a good way) but
it's a dumb way to describe him, and the beginning paragraph saying that this is where the hip-hop
genre picked up from MBDTF is stupid. The whole MBDTF comparison in general is kind of dumb beyond
the fact that they're both innovative for their respective genres. And this is very much R&B and not
hip-hop.

Sorry, I don't mean to be a dick and I usually don't even care to criticize reviews but if a review
is going to be featured, and it's by a staff member and given a 5, it should just be...well, good.
And makes it seem like the reviewer knows what he's/she's talking about (okay let's face it, he.

Every single thing he sings on that track seems emotional as hell though. Take the beginning of that part from "Diana walked up to me" (3:11). Just the way he enters into that line is aggressive as hell and it has the feeling of coming from emotions running free. Sure, the vocals might get turned up a bit on the "because he's sleeping with me" part, but he definitely delivers that line with some huge emotion. I think it would be louder on its own anyways, but yeah the levels have definitely been changed around a bit when the track was getting mastered, but that's pretty true of anything. It doesn't really change the fact that his intonation shows aggressive emotion, at least for me. It could be quiet as hell and I'd still think that way.

"No single rap record encompassed a complete package enough in 2011 to make a true musical statement for the future"

you talking about hip hop again and you're wrong.........again

It's funny you start review with your 2011 hip hop statement and at the end it seems like "Echoes of Silence" save hip hop genre, LP which is NOT a hip hop release

I don't really get that Weeknd Hype Train if we talk about production I think KNO on Oneirology did much better than Weeknd on that R&B record which "save a day for hip hop"

2011 is a strong hip hop year with so many great LP's Shabazz Palaces, CunninLynguists, Doomtree, Danny Brown, Death Grips, Hail Mary Mallon new Eligh collab, Sole and Skyrider Band and for most of people The Roots new LP

The line you quoted clearly states "rap record", unless you believe that rapping in R&B is unheard of

The fact that rapping within the genre of R&B is something that exists does not change that fact that Echoes of Silence is not a "rap record" and does not feature any rapping on it. So what does all of that really have to do with anything?

This one is a lot more similar to House of Balloons so definitely check it out. Also, if you really loved HoB, I don't see why you wouldn't bother listening to Thursday. The production gives it a bit of a different feel, but it's still very much The Weeknd.

Prefer MJ's Dirty Diana just for the raw emotion he delivers, but I dig this version too

As for EoS, it's awesome. I don't think The Weeknd could put anything out that isn't awesome at the moment. Taking the trilogy as a whole, I would give it a 5 no problem. Wonder how long we'll have to wait for an album

1 - Yes it is the funniest; everyone is laughing

2 - This year was extremely weak for hip-hop based on the releases you just mentioned, but you're entitled to your opinion. If you like that stuff, then more power to you - I am jealous that I can't find satisfaction at all this year as much as I did in years past. But it seems you dont have that problem, which is great for you.

Gabe - reviews are all about similes and comparison to things people can relate to. At the end of the year, everyone is obsessed (here anyway) with how things stack up at the end of the year. What better comparison than a record that used production techniques atypical for its genre and really redefined boundaries? If you want an in depth analysis check the forums or discuss on the blogosphere. I guarantee they will tell you how the bleeps and bloops on some of the songs are faster or slower or more/less interesting and that he still croons the same as usual. How helpful would I be if I did that

The best thing on this is the cover of Dirty Diana. Other than that, this release didn't really grab me. Just another overhyped album that lacks consistency.

Listening now but it won't be a 5... guaranteed. Good probably but no 5. You should rethink that rating IMO. ;^)

I like this version of Dirty Diana.
