it is excellent, but not refreshing. Imho, of course.

Honestly for a 70's-influenced 'prog' album their approach here (particularly with regards to musicianship/instrumentation) is really refreshing to my ears.

it's refreshinf in terms of execution, not in terms of ideas. Better?

I think there's some very refreshing ideas dotted about on here.

okay, then we just disagree.

Refreshing for Opeth too, not just for the style of the album. The band have always had a certain way of constructing a song, almost like they were piecing bits together (or other times just keeping it simple/generic) but they got more adventurous and experimental in that regard here.

I said it was refreshing from the point of view of execution. There are some songs that make it difficult to recognise the Opeth character in them. But it's not refreshing for the genre. I don't think it's weird what I'm saying.

I don't think it's weird what I'm saying. It's refreshing for the genre because it doesn't sound like any particular 70's prog act, which is unusual for specifically 70's influenced prog. It's also refreshing because of how it has a different approach musically to other albums of its style, i.e going for a loose, free flowing style.

Of course it doesn't sounf like any particular 70's prog act. It took the recipe and made it with 2011 ingredients. They didn't just mimic a specific album/band. They took the atmosphere and philosophy and acted upon it.
Then, no matter what other bands of the same ''going back to the roots'' do, if the album is going back to the roots, then it's not progressive, so it's not contributing to the progressive genre.
|
| |
I never said it was progressive in the true sense of the word. Very little so called progressive rock has been truly progressive in recent years/decades. I said it was refreshing, which I stand by for all the reasons I have stated.

Yes, it's refreshing in some ways, it's not refreshing for the genre. We agree on that.
|
| |
It's more refreshing for its genre than most albums of its style. I'm not sure you agree on that but that's what I'm saying. Something doesn't have to move a genre forward or anything in order to be a refreshing listen.

Feel like Opeth's next record is integral, they need to bounce back.

They need to start doing slams!

Opeth have faith in others, I have faith in them. I'll listen to whatever they put out. I'm not going to be amazed, if it's not that good, but the album will definitely have some standard quality. The same as PC, not excellent, just great because it has many songs I'd like to listen again and again.

From the new snippet it sounds like the album will be in the prog rock direction. I know it's only a few seconds, so it could have some surprises.

If it isn't a new direction, which I'm guessing isn't, I hope it sounds more like this than PC.
