The direction on this album is amazing, but it just feels like it could have been pulled off better.

In what way is this worse than, say, The Tipping Point?

tipping point is not that bad actually. a bit more commercial, but not as laid back and boring as this release. honestly, i feel like this will appeal to folks that aren't that into hiphop, which is good ultimately for the genre.

I just like the way it hangs together really. i mean, if I look at all the elements that make up the roots' albums, game theory, things fall apart and phrenology destroy this in terms of rapping and musical ambition, yet i still enjoy this more. Maybe it's a more-than-the-sum-of-it's-parts thing or w/e

Sam, do you ever rate albums without qwe's permission?

"arent you the guy that likes death grips lol"

yeh arent you the guy who goes into the threads of obviously great albums and attempts to call them average (or pathetic, even!) before finally submitting and upping his rating to 4.5 two weeks later?

see: public strain

Sam, you change your ratings more than anyone I know. I don't see how people who loved How I Got Over aren't really digging this, and I don't get how it's 'boring'; there are so many hooks, so many nifty little quirks, samples, and nods to several genres. I mean, despite this being much more geared towards commercialism, it's far from dry. The only moments I legitimately hate are: the chorus of "One Time", the chorus of "Kool On" (but seriously, everything else about that song rules), and the opening to "Lighthouse".
