"Aren't drums and bass always dull has hell with these sorts of bands?"

Depends what you consider boring. If you listen to some of Chevelle's other stuff, the drummer at least put together some pretty solid beats and fills. On this it was as if he didnt even try to be innovative.

Not to tar every band with the same brush, but bands like this and Breaking Benjamin, the rhythm is pretty basic stuff. This is a bit more out there than BB (love the bass tone) but it never shines. I always think it's about the vocals for this sort of sound.

Led Zeppelin is 'classic' hard rock. Chevelle is hard rock.

I should check this sometime, I love Sci Fi Crimes.

Gonzo, Ever hear 10 Years-The Autumn Effect? Same alt metal genre but drums and bass are far from boring on that.

I haven't no. I shall check it out. Though, what I'm getting at is this style of music -for the most part- is rhythm takes a backseat.

Overall, probably my least favorite Chevelle, but that's not to say it's not worth checking out. Some awesome tracks on here, namely Face To The Floor, Envy, and the title track.

Pinata kicks so much balls. Probably one of their best songs of all.

They need a rhythm guitarist so Pete can solo more

He's actually pretty good when he wants to be

The sad thing is a lot of the musican that play this kind of music are amazing. I stumbled across a video on youtube of Aaron Fink (ex-gutarist in Breaking Benjamin) at soundcheck with everyone but Ben, and they played a song -I forget which song- and he lets loose with a face-melting solo near the end.

Still, it's the style of music I guess.

Ha, thats weird. I havent listened to Breaking Benjamin since high school but Fink's solos always kinda sucked on the record.

But I guess youre right. It bums me out. This band clearly has the potential to write some great music, they just play it too safe to ever really hit hard enough. Still Im not a believer in the notion that if you add endless guitar noodling and five extra minutes of pointless shit to each song your musical integrity increases at all either, so...

I agree. But if a solo or something with a bit of technicality works use it. ha I love bands like this for vocal sake though. There is some great melodies on this record.

I've always loved these guys and I just downloaded the album and listened to the meddler. All I can say is that pete's voice seems to get better and better on every album. Also, these guys put on the most solid shows I've seen. Everything sounds exactly like their recordings

also, point #1 has some decent drums on it. If you haven't already listened to it you should give it a listen although it is the least refined album they've created.
