I heard one song through a YouTube link and downloaded the rest. A resounding meh from me. It's decent for power metal, and the singer does have some skills, but this is nowhere near Primal Fear or Stratovarius.

Some of the lyrics are good, and then some are, as people have mentioned, pretty much cringe-inducing, which at this point is somewhat difficult to do if you regularly listen to power metal. But, the instrumentation here is damn solid. It's just a shame he can't pair that awesome voice with some quality material.

why on earth would a pro-Christianity band call themselves theocracy? dumb.

I can explain. Matt intends the word "theocracy" to mean a state of being, the state of allowing God dominion over one's heart. Check the title track on the first album to understand it better; it's an extraordinary concept.

Sounds ace. Good review.

I'm not hating, but this sounds like most power metal. I don't really hear that much different about it. Still a solid album, but I don't understand how you can draw a line between this and the rest of power metal. Either way, good review, good album. pos

With my opening lines, my point was that there is bad power metal and good power metal, and that this is good. I can see why you interpreted that differently though, and you're right, this album sounds like most power metal.

Attributed to Frank Zappa and many others:
"There are only two kinds of music: good music and bad music."

I see where you're coming from. I hear a lot of Astral Doors in the instrumentals, and that's
definitely a good thing.

I know I don't speak for everybody, but as an atheist, Christian lyrics really don't bug me much as long as they come off as meaningful rather than preachy. Even then, I don't tend to judge based on lyrical themes.
I'l give this a listen. Love power metal. Lovelovelove it.

Ending: From a Christian, Theocracy definitely has the former type of lyrics. The music is better than the preachy bands as well. Still have yet to actually listen to this CD, it should be coming fairly soon...

Glad you enjoyed! Matt Smith is an incredible singer.

First listen, it's quite good. So heavy. Matt's vocal tone is rather strained, though, and there's too many syllables and not enough melodies, which disappoints. The biggest flaw is that it sounds like Theocracy is trying too hard to be METAL, which works for the awesome riffs but sounds rather laughable when Matt pulls out a "UUUH!" or a thin scream here and there.

Now while the atheist musical consumer might shudder at the thought of Christian lyrics, the truth is that this album is too good to ignore.
There are groups that weave metaphor and symbolism into their works to give a greater poetic feel, then there are others that simply punch you in the face with their lyrical intent. This group seems to belong to the latter. I found their devotion to their God a bit annoying, even though the musicianship was competent.
But take that with a grain of salt, as I'm very much anti-religious and mostly interested in grim kvlt musik as of late.

Heh, loads of sputnikers are into obscure kvlt music, I don't blame you.

I generally dislike power metal for two simple reasons: 1 - Dragonforce was my first exposure.... 2 - And this applies to the first reason as well, it is cheesy and the vocals and be annoying.
With that being said, I cannot get enough of this album. Hooks aplenty, and, although I am not a devout chrisitian, I still am a christian and find the lyrics pretty awesome

good review but I just cannot get into this album or powermetal for that matter
