After VU he had a carte blanche and could go in any direction, which is showed on the diverse though far-from-perfect s/t, but then he just went the easy way with the whole glam thing and it took him so many years to recover.
I mean he admitted it was cheap in 1978's Street Hassle but it wasn't until 1989 when he finally said "fuck it" and became uncompromising again. And because he was, well, old, the few great albums he made since then weren't as great as what I think he could achieve in the 70's.
