defjaw83: I've been reading reviews here on Sputnik time to time but never really felt an urge to comment something (usually blah blah doesn't mean too much to me) but I had a need to comment this one. Why? The older and more "socio-sensitive" I am the angrier and more pissed off I am about the artists who waste time and energy on some imaginary fucking problems when we have a world full of shits... And i am EXPLICITLY talking about the artists with INFLUENCE, that is where I want to meet this review in context!! I mean bands which sell out big arenas and than are singing about so-called troubles as if they sang about the real problems. They have the strength to cry out loud about how this world is going to hell and instead they feed young people with primitive rhymes about dancing souls... urgh!!

Sorry for my English btw...

What sells sells, however.

This album is their worst.

@maar

But don't you think that some bands don't want that sort of political edge to their art? I mean, there are bands that do that sort of thing well, but that's not Coldplay's motive.

Plus, they probably wouldn't be as big as they are, with as much influence if they were a political band. Sometimes music is best enjoyed as an escape

Coldplay would disagree with you about "the important stuff".

Also, Martin does fucking shitloads for charity.

defjaw83: I agree 100%. And I am the last man on Earth who would want all bands to be political!! Actually I don't like it very much when artists do some statements about things they don't understand... But (and it is the BUT I find quite important): The worst approach to music when you are "famous" is when this "looks like" it is motivated by the need to "say something" but the words are shallow and not full in the sense of the word. I quite understand why some of reviews connect this last Coldplay album with U2 for instance. Because Coldplay apparently wanted to "say something" and "do something" similar BUT (again) with stopping halfway ... somewhere between the desire to be little political (or whatever this could be called) and on the other hand to fill radio waves with sad and sweet songs about little things they are famous for. I don't blame them for this and the reviewer here described this "halfwayness" in an almost perfect way... It is impossible to write it all down and definitely more we would understand each other when sitting in a pub, drinking beer and talking about this. In a column like this adequately my words here look shallow and without the point.

p.s. I think nice comparison would be with 30 Seconds To Mars last album "This is War". Leto's need to engage young people to "fight" is so strong, almost the same way as his strategy to write VERY emotional songs (freely translated from my language as "fertilising songs") which make little girls almost commit suicides and give everything to this handsome guy. BUT () I find Leto's approach in both ways more intensive and basically "true". So This is War is quite funny for me BUT as I feel it more "true" for young people than Mylo Xyloto. I would wander if the fans would die rather for Leto or Martin And don't say Coldplay is more "adult" band then 30 stm

Well written and I get your point, but Coldplay has been changing and shifting musically from album to album. You kind of had to expect that it wasn't going to be another Rush of Blood to the Head or Parachutes. Keep up the good writing, but maybe a pinch shorter.

I agree with the score but the review seems more like a rant to me, sorry, just not my kind of review so I won't give it a positive or a negative. I reviews it too if you wanna check my take on it out.

This album is their worst.

Agreed. Sucks more than Viva La Vida, which I thought was impossible.
