It's fine I just saw you have Songs About Jane at a 3 so I'm content to agree to disagree.

Thanks dude. It depends what type of emotion you're talking about, I think. To me, this record is everything positive about the universality and optimism of pop music with an incredibly sincere tone - it really, really hits me hard. Obviously Parachutes had more of that introspective, bottled-up, tender emotional connection to it but I hope most people can see past the synths and Rihanna and see the soul of this record.

I think they peaked with ROBTTH, which has some fantastic stuff on.

The Rihanna track on this is actually pretty good though

"with an incredibly sincere tone"

See... no. This is where I disagree. I don't hear anything sincere about this record – Viva la Vida was more convincing for me in that regard. To me, all of this stuff seems to purport to sound universal when it's actually meaningless.

The album is better than some of the advance word made it sound, though, and "Paradise" is a good song despite having some of the worst lyrics I've ever heard.

I think, to try to get to the core of it, people's opinion of an album as unequivocal as this one is always going to hinge on an awful lot of things, not least their prior relationship with Coldplay, and to a lesser extent the way they see pop music, ecstasy, subtlety.

I believe liking/disliking newer Coldplay (and many other artists, for that matter) really depends on how big of a "lyrics person" you are. I personally think a lot of people on sputnik care wayyy too much about lyrics and whether or not something is technical/difficult to play/edgy/not popular and not enough about whether they simply -enjoy- the sound. My gf likes britney spears and I will admit that some of her songs are catchy. There's nothing wrong w/ that.

Idk, I think I'd file Britney under 'empty' pop music like some people have done this album.

I think it's one of the least empty albums I've ever heard.

Ive only heard a few cuts but they are all awesome. Then again Im a fan of Joshua Tree esque over the top grandiose rock anthems.

Well, I kinda resent that notion of caring about how "edgy" something is to enjoy. I can remove myself from the
listening experience and admit that the album has great melodies, but that's always been Chris Martin's strength. His
singing, though...not so much.

I honestly don't think my relationship with prior Coldplay material is that important since my exposure to them is pretty
limited to their Brian Eno production era. I just find this stuff to be unconvincing. There's a lot of unabashedly
sentimental rock, pop, and electronic music that gets me going but I guess this just isn't my cup of tea at the end of the
day!

"Idk, I think I'd file Britney under 'empty' pop music like some people have done this album."

Yeah, but it has no intentions of being anything else. That alone puts it above this for me, which strikes me as false more than anything else.

I care about authenticity even as I concede that it is an artificial construct.

Seriously, you listen to ETIAW and hear a band putting on that euphoria?

If so, we have reached an impasse!

Well, yeah. It sounds so calculatedly "epic".

Indeed, we've collided at a dead end! Nowhere to go from here except...up?
