God of emptiness rules
Formulas might be their most disjointed album but when it hits, it hits HARD
Gateways is too safe for MA standars, not bad but doesn't have the spark.
Heretic is pretty good but has the crappiest production ever.
This has thin production.
Domination has plain sucky/uninspired tracks.
Covenant has boring tracks.
But all of 'em have songs/sections/ideas that I'd say were unmatched back in the day and even today.

Wrong, Heretic was, is and will always be garbage, By those times Morbid Angel wasn't even relevant anymore. Dare to say they weren't as relevant as before after Domination.

Another fool that hasn't paid attention to the album i see.
Heretic fail is the production/mixing. Underneath there is a mammoth of an album hampered by those issues.

Heretic rules yea

The songwriting on Heretic is much better than the production is bad, it's just a bit bloated with interludes at times.

the guitar work is a perfect blend of relentlessly ghoulish and technically interesting that it's probably some of the best riffing in the whole genre. Visually, it's like tentacles rising up from lava, scorching your soft tissue with its touch. Good shit.
Trey is king.
And the production is awesome here.

This is one of my favorite albums ever. I'm a guitar player so my main reason for transitioning from Thrash to Death Metal was that I heard great things about the musicianship in the genre but not so highly regarded in songwriting department. Meaning most death metal music consists of each band member showcasing their individual talents within the songs rather than working together to focus on the feel of the songs as a whole. That was until I heard this album. I was blown away from first song on album "Fall From Grace" because the guitar sounds, tones, and writing were unreal as well as the drums. It was all so unorthodox yet strangely cohesive at the same time. I own this on cd and on vinyl and every time I play it it's as fresh sounding as the first. So yes, this IS better than "Altars" and has more creativity and skill of execution in the first song than both "Altars" and "Covenant" and I give both of those a 4.5/5 so that's how monumental this album is. If it goes over your head than you probably don't have a musicians ear. In which case I feel sorry you will never comprehend its beauty and power.

Nice. An MA review should be slightly arrogant. Although you do claim to feel sorry for someone which makes you a weakling.

| |
Nah Altars is definitely better than this and the production here is not great. However the album itself is excellent.

Samano seems to think loving this album is compulsory to having a musicians ear lol.

Yeah.
"If it goes over your head than you probably don't have a musicians ear."
AKA if you disagree with me you're too stupid to understand. I get why he loves it but it's not the be all end all of death metal, that's for sure.
