Plus no overall theme or 'storyline' to make it feel cohesive, seriously just an incoherent
collection of average songs

Yeah cuz every album has to have a concept or theme and can't just be a collection of short, sweet and
catchy music. Do you listen to pop?

the songs arent sweet tho, for hte most part

catchy maybe.. sometimes. but most of these songs seem very bland and watered down compared to the earlier material, even blood mountain which at least had some interesting genre bending material on it (though not always wonderfully executed)

Not at all, but Mastodon's strongly conceptual releases are definitely my favourites, and I would not call anything here sweet or catchy

agreed. lamentably, this record only features the "short" part.

Demi that's a different argument though. It's one thing not to like the songs, fair enough. But to criticize the album for not following a certain theme is ridiculous.

That was in reply to Keyblade btw

I agree MeatSalad...

"You know how we took ourselves really seriously with Crack The Skye and in doing so made our best album? Why don't we go in the complete opposite direction and make a goofy and unfocused album with track titles featuring words like "gasm" and "fingernails", and make the artwork and production really shoddy? It'll be really 'zany' and 'wacko' dude, and smack of effortlessness bro... maybe we'll feature on a few Adult Swim shows!"

I'm all in favour of bands making a 'whatever' non sequitur album, hell even Radiohead has made a couple of those, but this is just pooooooooor

sticking with Gonzo and key on that one, but I do hope what they're recording in the studio now is a more conceptualized album like CtS and Leviathan.

Just read an interview today on the new album, and it's extermely unlikely to be concept as they "haven't had enough time".

It's also being produced by Nick Raskulinecz who has done work with Foo Fighters and Rush. So we can brush that bullshit of Bryan Adams doing it. lol

I was just kidding about that, but this isnt far off.

This guy is a pretty safe pick, and its becoming more apparent that Mastodon think of themselves as a "rock-band". Raskulinecz has produced the 2 shittiest FF albums, the 2 most recent AiC albums and the 2 most recent Deftones albums.

Hunt No Yokan, here we come
