That's what I thought, and I guess that's why devil and god is a 5, but like once I stop comparing it to other albums and listened to how it flows and progresses...the simplicity and uniqueness of Bed, You Stole, Noro etc.

"“Bed,” maybe “In a Jar,” and half of “You Stole” kind of suck"
wrong.

"all of the songs are great, except for Daisy"
That was one of my favorites.

Not my favorite BN album.
It's great, though. But still, not my favorite.
Good review though, I can see where you're coming from for sure.

Superbly well written review here, Adam. I liked it so much that I decided to take another full listen to this. You hit on all of my original misgivings very well and took an interesting angle here; exposing Daisy's weaknesses and revealing them to be crucial to the album because of historical context and its qualities characteristic of being 'human'.
edit: I just upped my rating by .5. This gets better each time I hear it.

at first I thought: another Brand New 5 review,oh god
but hey, this is a great one

"Why are the staff suddenly writing all these totally unnecessary reviews for old albums?"
cause you can still discuss art if it hasn't come out in the last six weeks...cunt

Your review perfectly explains why I must listen to the entire album, rather than songs here and there. It just makes sense as a whole.

YES. I was waiting for a review exactly like this. The Devil and God was an absolute favorite from the first time I listened to it, but Daisy grew. And grew. And grew more. The more I listened to it the more it resonated with me, from the despondency of You Stole to the "I'm on my way to Hell" at the end. Perhaps it's because my life feels like hell right now, maybe it's because it feels more real than most other albums.
In a Jar is one of Brand New's best tracks ever. The jarring transition from the recording "The chariots shall rage in the streets" to the screamed defiance.. then "run a million miles if you were first prize" the bitter solo, the transition to the bleakness of Noro, it's unbelievably visceral.
"Rage, rage against the dying of the light." -If that quote was an album, that album would be Daisy.
