Did anyone really expect this to be good? I'm not even going to bother, after listening to Adolescents.

Oh dear. Just as surely as Coldplay did, just as surely as Kings of Leon did, and just as surely as Audioslave did for a couple of singles, Incubus have turned into U2.
Stopped reading.

Really good review. I stopped caring about Incubus after A Crow Left

They've been getting progressively worse since Morning View. I'm not surprised at the rating.

This album has almost no lasting value it seems... I enjoyed a few songs for about a week yet past that I haven't wanted to come back to it once.

I disagree. I listened to Light Grenades all the way through maybe once or twice. This, on the other hand, I listened to solidly for about three weeks, just to get my head around it.

Saying that they 'misjudged the mood of their fanbase and rock as a whole' is somewhat of a moot point. Reading
interviews with them, it's pretty clear that they've always written music as a personal, artistic expression meant for
themselves as a band and exploring the edges of music, not specifically for their fans (and least of all, rock as a
whole [if you can even boil them down to the expectations of a specific genre). It's kind of a "Hey, we've done the
whole filling arenas around the entire world thing, we've sold god knows how many CDs, there's no point trying to
push that route further. So now what?" sort of view, and with Mike in particular, it's clear that they've chosen just to
push themselves and do something different artistically, rather than regress to what they were on one of their past
albums or what fans/critics/rock want them to be.
Seriously, take the time to read this interview with Mike:

One other quick thing - it's a good idea to stop looking at Einziger as just a guitarist, and more as a multi-
instrumentalist and composer. Sure, it's not so much the Heroic Guitarist kind of archetype that rock and rock critics
have come to expect; it's a much more a deferential approach, focusing on how the band comes together as a whole,
how the different instruments and different timbres interplay, and (most importantly) realizing that some parts are
better on other instruments besides guitars. Which is not to say that there isn't an incredible amount of complexity
here, it's more that it just isn't flashiness, or even guitar-based.
