Incubus really hasn't been that interesting since the 90's. Still, I like to hold out hope that they have another great album in them.

I think your reaction to this album will be a very common and understandable reaction for any long time Incubus

fans. I didn't like the album at all after the first listen. I thankfully gave it a few more spins and have had time to let

the nuances of the album become apparent. I have now come to love this album. It is full of great melodies, realized

through subtle, yet complex songwriting.

I think the U2 and RHCP comparison is warranted to the extent that bands that had very unique and identifiable

sounds, in a search to redefine themselves, incorporated more elements of standard pop music to create their new

records. They are definitely expecting a lot of their fans to accept this new direction, but I think the test of time will

show that more people will like this record than not like it (hopefully at least).

"Just as surely as Coldplay did" WAT. NO WAY.

This is a disappointing album though. It sounds like they changed their influences completely.

"In the Company of Wolves" is an obvious attempt of a Coldplay sound rip off.

"Einziger is completely anonymous; the guitars lines on this album could have been written and played by just about

any guitarist in the world....Einziger seems to have mistaken subtlety for meekness."

I would have to disagree with your assessment of Mike's presence on this album. While he certainly is exercising

restraint, Mike's playing on this record is anything but unoriginal or meek.

Defiance is a perfect example of Mike's use of compound chords, creating a chord soloing effect. He uses extended

and inverted chords with voicings that carry melody along with the rhythm and harmony. In the process, he has

created what I think is their best acoustic song to date.

The Original's solo displays some of Mike's original style of guitar playing. The solo is very rhythmically disorienting,

creating an effect similar to the randomness with which wind chimes sound like blowing in the wind. This solo would

be hard for any advanced guitar player.

Friends and Lovers is a song which displays some of the nuanced playing that can be easily overlooked. It sounds

like Mike is playing some simple octaves behind the melody. In reality, he is fingerpicking these octaves over an

open string, with a triplet pattern against the backbeat.

Mike's playing on Friends and Lovers exemplifies what this album is all about. Flashy guitar work is replaced with

subtlety, and a strong emphasis on songwriting, through nuance and developing themes within the songs.

If Incubus was to sound like U2, that would be awesome! Maybe their generic sound would turn into something worth paying attention to. Unfortunately, this album is mediocre at best, but Incubus is quite a mediocre band. Their best album is not half as developed as U2's worst. (No Line on the Horizon being that album...)
