except "born this way" isn't solely about being gay. it's more about the need to love yourself. how is that patronising?

also, your historical context is doubtful. there have always been edgy female popstars - madonna? and there are still plenty of bland, pretty, pitchperfect singers - xfactor?

some typos: prententious, vieled.

was enjoying the review until i got to this bullshit

Throughout the '90s in particular, the outlook was bleak - the women that were selling records by the bucketload, the likes of Whitney Houston, Spice Girls, Shania Twain, Mariah Carey, and Celine Dion, were bland and emotionless, no more than vehicles for songs that could have been performed by anybody..

aren't you one of the old guys? how could you even type this out and not punch yourself in the dick? Alanis is the obvious omission, and I understand why you forgot her because she basically kills your point, but the 90's also gave us Sarah Machlachlan, Lauryn Hill, & Faith Hill.

also, if Whitney Houston's voice is "bland and emotionless" than i must have no idea what the standard is, because fuck if that shit doesn't bring a tear to my Eddie the Head tattoo...

Album cover looks like an all-female Judas Priest tribute band.

I think ya mean Sweet Dreams bro

Damn, you're right. When did the name of that track change? It was always called "Beautiful Nightmare" when it played on TV.

uggh every lady gaga review is so long, we're such Pitchfork wanna-bes.

Pitchfork's reviews aren't really that long in the grand scheme of the internet tbf. You're right though; all I'd say is this album (and Gaga in general) gives the listener a lot to chew over.

aren't you one of the old guys? how could you even type this out and not punch yourself in the dick? Alanis is the obvious omission, and I understand why you forgot her because she basically kills your point, but the 90's also gave us Sarah Machlachlan, Lauryn Hill, & Faith Hill.

Lauryn Hill and Alanis Morrissette both very obviously belonged to other genres (the way Alanis was marketed at the time was aimed squarely at the grunge crowd), and Faith Hill and Jewel were both boring as shit (unless you were calling out "Pieces of You" for being more condescending than "Born This Way", which is a pretty good point in fairness). And nobody in the UK ever gave a shit about Sarah Maclachan, I'd never even heard of her until I read 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.

Also, that paragraph you quoted says absolutely nothing about their voices, just their songs and their personalities.

"i thought you bumped this shit up, conrad? what happened?"

I realized that this album still sucks

And STOP SHOUTING!, you're right, the message of "Born This Way" is more "love yourself", but fuck, if her method of delivering the "love yourself" message isn't the most trivializing and patronizing thing ever

is that seriously how you're going to respond lol

Lauryn Hill and Alanis Morrissette both very obviously belonged to other genres (the way Alanis was marketed at the time was aimed squarely at the grunge crowd)

dude. JLP sold 33 million copies (as of 09)... but it was still the #1 selling pop album of the 90's (as of 99) (followed immediately by Whitney and Shania) Also it sold 3x more copies than the most successful grunge record (Ten)...

And what does genre really have to do with your assertion, that the women that were selling records by the bucketload . . . were bland and emotionless, no more than vehicles for songs that could have been performed by anybody? Did Alanis just sell too many records to be included here or something? I mean, i think you're basing this whole retarded point on those VH1 Divas shows...

Faith Hill and Jewel were both boring as shit

blasphemy. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dls_cBmUt7Q

And nobody in the UK ever gave a shit about Sarah Maclachan

lol the UK

ok so let me get this straight...

you: 'they were bland/emotionless/boring, their songs could have been performed by anyone!'
me: dude whitney has an extraordinary voice. not many people could have pulled off her shit from the 90's. it was swag as fuck.
you: her voice is irrelevant to this discussion!!
me: the discussion of whether the pop landscape in 90's, where females pop artists got by on being good singers = inferior to the 10's, where the biggest pop stars (a category that apparently includes, Kate Nash and Lily Allen) excel because of how cooky they act or dress off-stage? That discussion?
you: yeah
me: ok, so let me get this straight... exceptional voice + love songs = bland, replaceable; autotune + crazy lyrical content (despite the fact that all of it is still written by the same people at the label, exactly like it was in the 90's) = a totally irreplaceable, unique contribution to music and WAYYYYYYY better...
you (covering your ears to tune me out): WAKE UP IN THE MORNIN FEELIN LIKE P. DIDDY...

And on that note this lady is just one half Madonna, one half Marilyn Manson. Nothing she does hasn't been done before, its all just for shock value and her own ego.

at the very least, Erotica:

(a) had good songs, and
(b) dealt with sex in a legitimately interesting and, for its time, provocative manner
