It isn't really traditional black metal either though. I'd even recommend Deathspell to him, really.

Yeah I agree it's not traditional black metal at all that's why I'm saying it probably wouldn't be a great choice for a newcomer to the genre. It's a lot more dense and a lot less accessible as compared to Paracletus (I assume this would be the album you'd recommend to check out from DsO first). Don't get me wrong it's a great album I just don't think someone who doesn't really listen to the genre would be able to as thoroughly appreciate it until they've gained a more developed taste for things.

In all seriousness, I just rec'd it because of his distaste for "regular' black metal. I think he should start with the basics as well, but I don't think he cares for them at all.
