"How can people like this more than Nocturne? HOW?! Half the album is literally made up of AJ shredding while the rhythm guitar chugs away. Not to mention the monotonous Muse anthems in every god damn song."
True. Overrated (and worse, overproduced)! In their defense, they're not horrible songwriters. It just seems that they tried to masquerade their inability to write a single memorable riff by having an incessant amount of sweeping and arpeggios over Dean's metrically dull chugs. Aside from "Complex Terms'" intro, the
mathy stop-go piece that follows it's chorus, and the BTBAM inspired riffage in "Digital Veil"(0:55-1:20/1:46-2:18), there isn't a single arrangement on this album that warrants the adoration this album is getting. Plus, much of "Antebellum" seems to consist of recycled riffs from "Vela, Together We Await the Storm."

Just finished my third listen, and had to change my rating. It's not bad by any means, but it's nowhere near as mind blowing as many of the fanboys are making it out to be.

Instrumentally, it isn't as good as Nocturne, yeah. But the album has much better flow, the song structuring has significantly improved, and the vocals on this album are WAY better than Ells's were. Granted, the guy doesn't have the sort of range that Ells does, but his voice doesn't get as grating as Nathan's did at times. Take Horizon to Zenith for example - It's easily the weakest track on here. Even though the vocals on the song are the most annoying on this album, i can still kinda enjoy it. But if Ells was singing it, it would be completely unlistenable. (I shudder to think what that chorus would sound like through his puke-worthy, nasally crying...)
As a whole, i think this is about on par with Nocturne. One step forward, one step back.

^pretty much my thoughts after one listen. it's not outright bad like midheaven was but i'm not seeing much reason to give this another spin

The energy of this album is like a breath of fresh air. I'm completely blown away, I didn't expect this kind of music from the band that released midheaven. Figured they'd go the way of generic chugging (hello darkest hour).

Although, i do wanna say that - even as someone who really enjoys this - I'm shocked that it's managed to maintain a solid 3.8-4.0 average on here. The comments on the pre-release news articles weren't NEARLY this positive.

Oh, I'm sorry. I guess I should take my logic and reason elsewhere.
Piss off.

And there is no way this deserves a higher overall rating than Scurrilous.
|

I'm also surprised about the positive feedback this album is getting overall; Scurrilous absolutely destroys this.

^^^^^Yes, and i haven't even been listening to scurrilous much
