I don't know. I just don't hear the compelling nature of this album. I feels like a complete regression from everything they've done beforehand. I honestly just feel bored when I'm listening either of the DMB albums, subsiding a few tracks ("And I Told Them I Invented Times New Roman" in specific).
It's just one of the albums I NEVER could get into, OR, understand the hype behind. But I love Whatever I Say Is Royal Ocean & Emarosa (so it's not a Jonny phobia).

Hmm interesting you enjoy Emarosa but not this... i'm a fan of both bands but personally think DGD has much more to offer. Downtown Battle Mountain 1 definitely has a lot of weak points and i can understand how it could be hard for a lot of people to get into. I think DBM2 is all together a more enjoyable listen than DBM1, its more "fun" i guess you could say...

I'm not hearing DTBM 1 sound from this, and hating that it's Mess oriented (personally thinking that he actually got worse). Disappointed that this wasn't that good for me, i hope it'll grow on me. I loved the rapping part in the song 'Spooks' though, i think that was Will Swan?

this album is right at my expectation. A solid album with a solid returning craig and a badass mess complimented by amazing intstrumentals. 4 ftw

Emarosa is so freaking boring.

Really? I found their S/T too be musically interesting, while I found this to be really boring... but
then again, I can listen to The Pax Cecilia discography in one sitting and not be bored.
Emarosa is what I listen to when I'm in the mood for some coffee. That, and Happiness... IDK, don't
ask.

I liked their work with Rotter, which is strange, as I usually have a strong dislike towards that kind
of stuff.
I'd say their S/T is Craig's strongest album vocally... even if the S/T plays the exact same song
twice.

People talk shit about Mess' surreal lyrics and unique delivery but seem to forget that his voice is just terrible. Both his and Craig's lyrics are abhorrent even if you're making allowances for audience. The callout shit at the beginning of 'Thug City' is exactly what almost ruined Fake History for me.

yeah the beginning of thug city... yeah. lol. still think mess is the man.

Eye Alaska, a seemingly mature band whose EP was totally amazing, did the same callout shit on a few songs on their LP. It's cringe-worthy and, for me, a band's credibility takes a huge hit when they do it - just my personal opinion.

i mean, they're just having fun with it. i thought it was pretty amusing at first, though upon repeated listens it gets pretty stale. but it still doesn't really detract from the nature of the rest of the song

I'm in love with what Will Swan is doing on this album. Mess sounds less horrible than he did on the s/t also. As embarrassing as the hip-hop influences (like Thug City) are, this might be their best musically imo.

Mess is obscure. I loathed him for years, and was my initial issue with Downtown Battle Mountain... but his vocals on Whatever I Say Is Royal Ocean are rather good... and they are somewhat infectious on Deathstar, though by no means good.

The only possible use for his "screams" imo is to subtly balance out Craig's more effeminate delivery, but when they're out front like this it's just unbearable for me.
