I'm not because the new Mygrain probably sucks balls because Mygrain sucks balls in general.

Always thought this band was mediocre even when I was new to melodic death, but I still will give this a shot. Review is great as always Jared.

Definitely wasn't going into this expecting to like it as much as I do. Such a great album. Hopefully the new Amon Amarth and Amorphis can match up to this one. I would say the same for Insomnium, but they bore the hell out of me.

This album sounds like a mixture of Amon Amarth and Kalmah, which is a good thing, at least for me.
|

Other reviews cited Kalmah, and I'm not hearing it.
Glad you like it Hawks!

Hell yeah man! And I think the Kalmah sound comes from the nature of the keyboards. At least that's where I hear the influence.

I'm not hearing it either. Couple songs in and it's ok so far, hated the reliance on chords in the first song, although the melodies that did occur were good.

I hate to say it, but the only melodic death metal bands which I care about anymore are Insomnium, Amon Amarth, maybe Be'Lakor, and Dark Tranquillity (assuming they can recover from We Are The Void). This is incredibly dull and does nothing that those four bands can't do better and (in the case of what is comparable to Amon Amarth) more fun. They try their hand at working in these really calming and flowing passages (a la Insomnium) that are supposed to be serene but are instead tiresome, lifeless and shallow, pairing them next to mounds of chords that Amon Amarth have been doing better since they became a band.
I'd compare it closest to what a bad Insomnium and wholly serious (meaning no vikings and pillaging and shit) Amon Amarth would sound like if fused together, with average lead vocals (guests aside, because I know Swano and Sevanen guested). Sure, Swano does a good job but for me clean vocals ruins melodic death 95% of the time, and not to mention the keyboards that like to suddenly rush the listener.
Just didn't like how it tried to be a bit of everything else, as if they are uncomfortable with who they are. Stuffing in guitar solos that wouldn't be out of place on a Scar Symmetry album immediately next to these soothing bridges is painful.

fair enough, kyle. I can totally understand where you're coming from

"Soul Journeys" and "Nova Flame" are good, though. This will probably be a high 2.5 or a 3.

I just like the whole atmosphere of this album. The sound of the keyboards and a lot of the riffs are catchy and I really like the vocalist. This is some of the best melo-death I've heard in a while actually.

Man even getting the rip on scar symmetry crysis? Besides that I agree entirely. Even though I'm not a fan of insomnium.
Overall pretty bored.

So, just listened to this... Insomnium and Amon Amarth in equal doses -- can't go higher than a 3.

These bands are just so boring. Generally they're good albums, but there's nothing to them.
