Is it similar to stuff like Portishead and Massive Attack?

No dude.
This is spliced samples and beats that aren't trip hoppy per se.
This is like a resident DJ at a hipsters paradise circa '97 wearing a BMX mask spinning vinyl and thinking he was cool.
Good but no Massive Attack

Yeah. Has some rly strong trip hoppy instances but all the way through. A great album no doubt but avalanches did it better. Also no massive attack [2].

I really struggle to get into this. I don't see how this is trip hop either. If it is, it's fringe

This is pretty weird. lol

@emyay a lot of trip hop IS pretty repetitive, so i assume that would be the point, like a lot of electronica

Ok, Stem/Long Steam is pretty sweet. I am stoked to hear the track with Bjork samples.

people call it trip-hop because everyone calls it trip-hop but honestly instrumental hip-hop is probably a more accurate term

What exactly is trip-hop?
Slow beats, strings, the odd sample, female vox. Whole record recorded as if it's creators have smoked a weather balloons worth of weed.

Bjork samples, hu? Death Grips!
This doesn't really have the downtempo vibes that make it feel like a trip hop album at all, which is why I'm quite bewildered when people say this is THE trip hop album

It's certainly not THE trip-hop album in the sense that it's the quintessence of trip-hop, but it definitely left a sizable influence on the genre
