The Foo Fighters, a band you either love or hate. I myself just have to decide on the time period. This is probably the Foo Fighters second worst album next to One On One. Onto the story how I got this, it was a family shopping spree, you know, the ones were you're mum goes "We will go to the shops you want at the end" just to stop you bitching when you get it? It was like that. My dear mother gave me 20 pounds and I went to a second-hand shop which were flagging them for a fiver. No wonder this was in a second-hand shop though. It pains me to say how average this stuff is. Lots of the songs never seem to grab my attention except the weird and the heavy ones. The other ones that aren't that have so many faults and flaws.
What was good about the album was the variety in some tracks. Some of the tracks has variety like the awesome opener Stacked Actors which starts with a very computer-like riff and a simple drum-beat. Then it goes all lounge on us. And Dave does his annoying quiet vocals. I honestly hate his vocals. He doubles his vocals a lot and he sounds horrible. Maybe it's his voice why I always go "Oh god, not The Foo Fighters!" The chorus to Stacked Actors is actually well done. It is a portray of what The Foo Fighters can be good at. The instruments are done well especially the drum work and the bass. The guitars have it's moments but it's nothing special.
The singles are the most annoying songs. Learn To Fly was cool on your first listen back in '99 but radio and music television have milked the song for all it's album worth. Breakout have suffered the same fate but the stupid yet humorous video makes up for it. Especially when Dave is trying to get the dog off his leg. The weird tracks are brilliant. Generator is one of my favourites on the album. The weirdest is in the beginning when Dave uses this kinda of effect on his voice to project this awkward sound. The beautiful Aurora is a perfect song, the one fault is Dave's quiet voice. I hate that voice so much. The instruments on the song is another matter. This is the ballads should be. Not cheesy emo acoustic stuff. Well, that's the noticeable mistakes down with. The Foo Fighters are good at tackling the ballads minus Dave's voice. Next Year is a nice song with Jingle Bells and all that jazz. I don't know. Maybe the album needs some time to grow on me or maybe it's just horrid. The strange thing is, bar the new one, most of The Foos albums sound samey. Yet, I like there first two albums and the latest one bore me. Maybe their old ones had more substance or that Dave cut his hair? I liked the past members. Pat Smear is well better than the latest to me. This album is a waste of money for the casual listener and critics like me so this has the "for fans only" tag on it.

good review man, i'd rate the FF albums like this:
first two-4 stars
other two-2-3 stars
IYH-3.5 stars
the FF became a pretty ho hum band after the Colour and the Shape
edit: and what's the point in using percents? it seems much too precise for an opinion. is it based on a school system or just #/100 means what it does? This Message Edited On 10.29.05

Good work, as usual. Though a bit short compared to your other ones. But that does not have to be a negative
I never found Foo Fighters very special. Nothing outstanding, but very solid music. 3/5 from me as well

I agree with everything you said. A few great tracks- Stacked Actors, Aurora, Generator. But everything else was pretty average and boring after a few listens.
I'd rate the albums like this-
1st 2- 4.5
TINLTL- 3
1X1- 2.5
IYH- 4
| | | first off, its called one BY one, and it is the 2nd best album (in your honor is first) in my opinion. plus, your review of there is nothing left to lose was way too harsh. its not the best FF album, but definitly not as bad as you said it was. id give it 3.5-4/5

| | | Everyone's an expert...hah.
I'm yet to hear this album in its entirety, but I have this vague memory of Stacked Actors...and really liking it, but I haven't heard that song in years. Learn to fly, like you said, was cool the first 10 times I heard it.
And yes, Colour and the Shape was a tight fucking album. Rock. This Message Edited On 10.29.05

Hahaha.
Very good review, constant. I think you'd do well to be a little less conversational in your reviews (i.e. don't say 'you'), but you have your own style and that's cool. I'd like a bit more detail though.

I didn't like your review at all... You bashed it, not paying attention to the great songs on it.... I disagree, I find Dave Grohl's voice beautiful, and one of the best out there.
