I kind of agree with the reviewer`s sentiment, although I never I articulated it in the same way he has. Whenever I have listened to this album it has struck me as a good `rock`record, but severely lacking in atmosphere, and quite unimaginative in terms of its reliance on a very stayed verse-chorus structure on a lot of songs. This album lacks what I like about black metal which is atmosphere, passion and darkness. The progressive touch of Enslaved has always sounded somewhat calculated to me. It is still a solid album, but it is by no means a masterpiece.

am i the only one who thinks the points the reviewer makes are kind of shallow and well... completely misguided.
Cream and Emperor? Yeah thats what this sounds like. and you waste close to two paragraphs complaining about the
screams and go on like there should only be cleans. this is black metal brosef, lets be real.
i wont neg, but something about this review pisses me off, and im not even crazy about the album.

ditching their black metal roots once and for all in order to make the psychedelic influences actually work
im also pretty sure that enslaved next album wont be fuckin tales of the inexpressible.

I can’t help but feel that a heavy, manly growl in the vein of Amon Amarth or Be’lakor would be better suited to the music
Oh man I feel the same. The vocals are one of the hardest parts to enjoy about this band. In some songs they come across fine, in others quite annoying. Still a pretty good record, though.

it is marred by repetition and its garish mixture of black metal and psychedelic influences.
at last somebody said it.
However, your rating is a bit too harsh.
good review, it was about time this got a more cold-minded approach.

while the review was quite well written it makes me think you have set certain limitations on what black metal should sound like and don't like it when stuff falls outside those expectations.

I can’t really pos your review since it’s so full of terms like “should be” and “should not be”, and with all due respect I find those arguments really boring. Enslaved are what they are, and that’s it. I too didn’t like the blending that Dan Swano did on Moontower yet I don’t bitch about it :P.
However you did have some good arguments to justify your feelings towards the album, can’t argue with that.
And for the record, I’ve never cared about enslaved before this album.
