I feel like Sufjan needs to learn how to make shorter albums. Obviously I can only judge Illinois and C&L, but the fact that the majority of his albums are around 70+ minutes long (and not considered double albums) is very daunting, at least for me; most of my favorite albums are 50 minutes or less, and I think the ideal album length is between 35 and 45 minutes, so 70 minutes seems really gratuitous.

Agreed @Ash but also Vesuvius and I Want To Be Well

I for one love longer, ambitious albums, and think that Sufjan really makes it work, but I definitely think that comes down to personal preference, I can see where you're coming from

I find the fact that the EP he released back in 2010 was an hr. long to be pretty funny. Oh Suf, you so crazy

I do occasionally like longer albums, but they are so hard to make consistent. Like, unless the concept is for it to be huge, then I don't see why albums need to be really long. For example I feel like Illinois would be better if it didn't jump back and forth between the longer and shorter tracks, which imo didn't feel necessary.

I definitely agree with you on Illinois, but I think this album especially is a great example of a long album being consistent in tone and length and ambition, like yeah the length on this feels very natural to me.

Also still need to listen to Michigan as well which is crazy cuz yeah grew up in Detroit and still haven't listened for whatever reason lol

Are the Christmas albums *really* worth it though?

Like would I want to listen to them at any time other than Christmas or are they enjoyable as albums in their own right?

It just depends on the songs really, I think there are some songs on his last christmas album that are enjoyable out of context
