The Scientist and Clocks are the only songs on this that don't totally kick ass. Still catchy tunes, but they drag a bit, not much going on.

In what way? Their ability to be totally static in feel and structure? (they both pick up a bit toward the end, to be fair) How about the linear build up of Amsterdam? The production in daylight? The instrumentals in god put a smile upon your face? Objectively I don't think you can compare a whisper fairly to anything else on the album.

X & Y didn't stack up because they tried to recreate the success they had with those two predictable singles. Viva La Vida found a solid balance by doing what the Beatles did. They disguised progressive and complex structures and ideas, but Coldplay did it by doing an album of almost entirely linear structures. Multiple hooks/melodies per song while still being able to satisfy their need for writing intelligent music.

That's how I feel, anyway.

I got sick of Clocks when it was a single, but I love The Scientist and Green Eyes.

Parachutes does have Trouble and High Speed; both of those are on the amazing side. The only song I don't really like from it is Yellow.

I actually think Speed of sound is a stronger single than Clocks (since they're so often compared) Green Eyes is beautiful. It's not as consistent as some of the stronger songs, maybe it's a bit too empty/raw at some parts. Coldplay are at their best when they're layering many instruments/beats/melodies. I like the rest, I understand the appeal, but w.e

I haven't listened to much of X&Y, but I absolutely love What If. That is probably my favorite Coldplay song.

The Scientist is great even if it's kind of bare bones for the first chunk, but I just love that chord progression with the piano. It's a perfect backdrop for the vocals.

Agreed, it's definitely more dynamic and interesting than Clocks. I feel like it achieves something by the end.

X&Y just has this sterile, samey feel to it. Talk, Fix you, and what if really kill it. Overall I think it's a great album, just not a great Coldplay album.

AROBTTH and Viva La Vida, to me, are indisputably stronger displays of songwriting and musicianship. Each song just manages to marry melody with complexly layered instrumentals that satisfy not only my need to be engaged/challenged, but also the need for catchy hooks.

Some really good stuff on this album, this one also holds a special place in my heart since I listened to it even when I was really young.
