Knott, sorry mate, I wasn't aiming any comment at you, I still think I've got negs because I've offended some people with the rating but I wasn't speculating that it was you or anything like that.

I am still suprised that 6 people can honestly say they thought this review was poorly written. I really disliked the album and did my best to justify it, whilst writing something that had to be entertaining. It's my opinion after all. Not sure why people are so hung up on me not focusing on music enough, as if the lyrics and tone of the album are secondary in importance. Am I supposed to write about the 'crunchy guitars' and the 'electro-synth' elements? Why should I? You've heard it all before in the other reviews of this and it had little bearing on how I personally rated the album because I found it all quite unremarkable. You may think I'm wrong but isn't that fair enough?

I personally think if you'd found a way to slide that little bit of commentary into the review somewhere it would have sufficed. Get me?

For me, lyrics are as important as any other element of an album, especially so with a Weezer album - no matter how bad they may be now, Cuomo's lyrics were a major draw for me to the band in the first place. The lyrics to 'Across the Sea' on Pinkerton just blow me away, they're even written in broken English as if he's reciting the letter he's received, it's just genius. So it kills me that he's stuck in this juvenile persona he's in now when he was once so great.

Knott, fair enough, but by not saying that I'm effectively doing the same thing surely? Also, practically, my review's already pushing 800 words or something around that so I've gotta keep in what I feel is most important in my opinion. The most egregious and glaring problem with the album for me was the tone and lyrics, and I made sure that was the crux of my argument.

I won't neg, but this doesn't describe what the music sounds like at all, the only exception being "Beach Boys-esque harmonies" on Ruling Me.

Plus I don't even think the lyrics are all that bad. Songs like Memories and Time Flies are appropriate for Rivers's age, and Where's My Sex is just a 40-year-old man with a corny sense of humor writing about his daughter.

I agree with Radicality that the lyrics aren't that bad.

Really, Smart Girls is the only part where his immaturity shows. The album has a fun reminiscent vibe, yes, but immature is the wrong word. Nostalgic, perhaps.

This felt like a review I would see on Pitchfork.
