Yeah, Heavy Horses is in the top 3 for me. It might just be the finest blend of their prog-folk mix; the balance is just right

It's predominantly folk and barely prog which I think works in its favour.

I'd probably say the band's first few albums are still their most predominantly folky and least proggy. It seems like Aqualung is where they really emerged with the prog style; sadly, I'm not the biggest fan of that album. I think the hard rock stuff sounds a bit uninspired compared to the softer dynamics

The more earthy and organic style of Heavy Horses and Songs from the Wood is where it's at :]

Their first few albums weren't prog but they were almost as bluesy as they were folk. Heavy Horses is their most 'pure' folk album if you like with only two songs straying from the basic folk sound. You could make an argument for Songs From the Wood too. I personally don't even think of Aqualung as a prog album. I mean the extended flute solo in My God is honestly the only moment that strikes me as prog. There is nothing prog about that album's song structures or musicianship.

Yeah, there was a lot of blues influence in the old stuff. I can see what you mean about the band's prog label being a bit overstated; that happens with quite a few bands anyway. Hell, I wouldn't consider about half of Porcupine Tree's discography prog, lol

Thanks Jamie for these precisions about Dun Ringill. I'm now more ready than ever to sing along the song ;) I'll check the Dark Ages lyrics as well. And while I'm into it, I'll even investigate into more Tull lyrics, since Ian is one of your favorite lyricist.

I'm still more of a Peter Gabriel guy as far as lyrics go, but Ian rules too

Gabriel has had some good moments as a lyricist but he's not in the same league as Anderson for me. Anderson is the only prog-related lyricist I would ever mention in the same breath as the likes of Dylan and Cohen.

Akerfeldt and Peart ;)

Peart has his moments but for the most part is cookie cutter prog lyrics

When examining classic Opeth (Still Life, Ghost Reveries, etc.), Mikael Akerfeldt is probably my favorite rock lyricist of all time. That's why I found the lyrics of Sorceress so unfortunate

Glad to see Peter Gabriel named as a top lyricist. He probably wrote the whole thing while he was the Genesis frontman, and if we add his prolific solo career, it makes a huge quantity of brillant songs under the belt. As a French speaker, it's hard for me to judge, but I feel that Peter has a knack for the lyrics. He has always been my idol, and he always will.
