wish he'd use more vintage instrumentation rather than synths.

Couldn't agree more. He's overused them to the point where I have trouble taking the keys seriously anymore.

yeah basically never let rudess try to emulate a guitar with his synth cause he sucks at it

This actually isn't far from the truth...

This is definitely underrated, certainly better than most of their post-Degrees albums

5th best DT for me. Makes me realise how much of the enjoyment is gone from their music now

That's what I realized the last time I listened to this, though some of it is recaptured in Dramatic Turn imo

No idea on how fans can call this a bad album after post Degrees Dream Theater.

Outside of a few dud tracks (You Not Me primarily), this is an amazing album

"If you haven't, please check out Hollow Years Live at Budokan. It's like they took all the elements of the song and improved upon them, especially the solo..."

They took it and extended it into a 9+ minute song that's just as awesome as Trial Of Tears.

I wouldn't say it's lack of enjoyment missing from their music, more like they've just gotten too comfortable and prefer to just wank on their instruments than write from the heart.

Look at The Astonishing - it's basically a "how can we make the flashiest album possible? Make it a rock opera with full choir and 30+ tracks and expanded universe!"

I actually remember loving it immediately when I first heard it. And I still really enjoy it now. It's more commercial sounding than the previous 2, but it still has a lot of the band's passion and enjoyable song writing. Especially compared to the post 6degrees albums

Post six degrees albums are...meh (though Octavarium the song and a couple others are also awesome)

Lines In The Sand is worth the price of admission all on its own....the middle section of that song is flawless

Yeah, I love how they got Pinnick to feature on Lines. Trial of Tears is stunning as well. The B sides are also terrific on this.

@Lucca: Yeah Octavarium is also enjoyable, but the band started becoming formulaic from then on.
