Sink or Swim has The Gaslight Anthem's best single songs.
59 Sound is the most consistent, solid, album.
American Slang is a little mix of both, but isn't as consistent as 59 and doesn't have as many/as good songs as Sink or Swim.

The album is great, it's not typical Gaslight, but we all knew that, Brian stated that numerous times before we all finally got a listen. The first five seconds of Boxer are fun, I don't care what anyone has to say about that. The album really needs time to grow on you, so if you don't like it, keep trying. I listen to the damn thing a few times a day (which is easy considering it's short length) and I'm really starting to love it. The Diamond Church Street Choir IS an amazing song, very upbeat, but I can't say is the best song on the album. Honestly, the best song on the album and maybe all their albums, is We Did It When We Were Young. The first time I heard it I was unsure, it seemed real sketchy, but eventually you realize the absolute passion and intensity Brian Fallon put into the song and it's just breathtaking. That chorus gives me goosebumps every time I hear it. And to all those who seem upset at Fallon's voice, well, that's what I love about him. You hear the rough edges, the scratchy bold voice you want from a blue collar band. Fallon nails it on this album, and it just feels so honest and real. Great release, only time will tell truly how great this album is.

Chan, there isn't one instance that Fallon is off key on this album. Not even when he's gone up a full octave on "Diamond Church St." That shit did take me off guard at first and I'll admit that I tended to change to the next song around that point, I couldn't really take it seriously, it just came across as showing off vocal chops. It's kinda grown on me though, as has the rest of American Slang. But his singing has never been better homeslice.
My only complaint about the album is that it kind of comes off as forced Americana/nostalgic shtick in some parts, whereas the '59 Sound felt so genuine and sincere, despite all the references, you could really relate to everything that was going on (although Cowgirls is still their only bad song in their entire catalogue IMO). It isn't gimmicky yet, hopefully that band never enters that territory, they're one of my favorites. The last thing I hope happens is that GA and Brian in particular start buying into their own hype/image.
All that being said I think they pulled off a really solid album, it ranks just a notch below '59 Sound for me. I can't believe people are rating Sink or Swim over this, yeah I love that album too but I don't think I'd still be listening to them if all they did was put out the same album again and again. I hate it when bands do that (unless you are Slayer).

Yeah I've been brute force listening to it in an effort to force myself to love it. The result is I like it much better now than when I first heard it.

ah, that's a risky move. it only has two outcomes -- either you like it more (such as in your case) or you will hate it with a fiery passion that burns for all eternity.
