The Key is unique album but it has it's problems.

First thing I have to say is this one of Dan Seagrave's classic covers. It fits the album concept to a T.

The first two tracks of the album are solid. Lake Of Fire has some killer leads and Standing In Blood has a Morbid Angel feel to it. After this? Not so many highlights and plenty of filler.

The keyboards are mixed bag. Sometimes they add a nice touch such as on 'Standing In Blood' where they are in the background but add to the atmosphere, but on a track like Neolithic they are horrendous. The keys stick out like a sore thumb and are plain annoying. It's a shame because they overpower the guitar at certain points where there are some decent riffs.

The last two tracks are the most progressive, but are hindered by the length and have no memorable parts. The lead guitars are just wanking throughout Empire Of The Sands.

I'm not sure how anyone can put this in the same category as a band like Atheist. Browning's drumming is pedestrian, the bass is non-existent, and the technically of the guitar is not even on the same level.

If there were more memorable riffs, less filler, and someone like Sean Reinert on the drum stool it would be a much better album. Some popping bass lines wouldn't hurt either.

Highlights are Lake Of Fire, Standing In Blood, and Andromeda Strain (except for the tacky keyboards).

yeah this is one of those albums where the concept is cooler than the actual music, its a mess (like everything mike browning heads tbh)

the only good nocturnus songs are lake of fire and arctic crypt.
