I think this one is pretty lacking in top tier tunes, I enjoy Parting of the Sensory, Missed the Boat and Spitting Venom more than anything here.
Favourite on this is Bukowski and that's just a great slightly witty song but hardly an epic life-changer

Ocean Breathes Salty is so good.

It's just an ok thing for me, Float On is an important one for the band though as it proved they could write a hit and against all the odds remains enjoyable. Ocean Breathes Salty I've always found melodically mushy, doesn't appeal to my tastes, and World at Large is a decent enough extended intro with a 'M&A-lite' retread vibe. Album underwhelms me
My least favourite by them by a fair distance actually because the new one and We Were Dead continue to grow on me over time

Even if Spitting Venom is better than any song from here this is the better album. We Were Dead starts and ends strong, but most of the middle songs have annoying parts to them.

black cadillacs is a ridiculously fun song

Talons - But the twin aesthetics of this album are both a little annoying. The Tom Waits horns and satin in a coffin stuff is contrived, Brock doesn't need to flick the wacky switch, dude is wacky.
Then there's this mushy really ugly watery nothing melodies to songs like Ocean and The View, they sound over cluttered and indistinct to me.
The best songs are the ones that duck all this guff like World at Large, Bukowski, Float On and Tetons. The rest is merely ok for me, but I understand that's just my taste

We Were Dead has its moments but overall is not as solid as this one, though this has some low points too, This Devil's Workday being one of them.

With Ocean I just dislike that ho hum wandering melody, seriously its one of my least favourite MM melodies so it's up against it from the start. Then I don't like the production choices either and...it's an ok song.
We Were Dead is great, it succeeds at pretty much everything it aims for (to be the most mainstream indie MM album). Lots of variety, the pure pop stuff is good, they hit the epics out the park, the opening song is underrated among MM openers. The middle songs aren't too bad, Education is a fun Talking Heads style tune and Little Motel is cheesy but I can't help but like it.
I'd say I really like 8 of the songs on that one and about 5 here

Ocean is one of their best songs tbh, and all their albums are pretty wacky in their own ways, besides maybe M&A, so don't really see how that could be a complaint. We Were Dead is very wacky, definitely crazier than this, and comes across as more annoying than here as a result.
