It took me an unfortunately long time to figure this out, but apparently the drummer/keyboardist also did the music for The Binding of Isaac... In retrospect it makes perfect sense.

Only this band had the guts to use Joyce's Wake as lyrics.

Still my favourite album of theirs. The Companions is such an epic opener.

Formicary is in my top 5 songs. Every transition is perfectly executed.

It's their best, but it took me a while to think so.

Their debut has a special place in my heart, but this one is probably their most cohesive. Love 'em all though.

It is indeed. There aren't many who do 'weird' metal as well as these guys. At least, not as consistent in quality.

I don't know how many people are aware of this but Free Salamander Exhibit is the spiritual successor of this band without Carla or Matthias. And if you want more of Carla/Matthias then they have a project called Rabbit Rabbit Radio, "The Perfect Abomination" is a good jumping off point into the project. Lastly, and this was already mentioned, but Matthias worked on the remake Binding of Isaac OST under the name Ridiculon. I'm always pleasantly surprised to find out where the band members pop up. The vocalists, Nils, is the voice actor for Tigtone which is a new Adult Swim Show.

I think SGM is one of the coolest bands ever and I'm really interested to see if their influence finds its way into young musicians of the future. Shit, even Tony Levin from King Crimson admires these guys so much that he's done a cover of "Sleep is Wrong" and Tom Waits likes their music enough to be a guest on some of their side projects.
