Now guys Killswitch's first album and the first self titled were good.
|

Killswitch has always been a "couple good songs here and there" kind of band to me.

Relinquished: Killswitch's first album was the 1st s/t wasn't it?

I would agree on the vocalists range - none existent. The production is kind of annoying also as mentioned but some of this is absolutely stellar

The low-end of this album is fucking annoying, but Palace is right, since when has range been important in hardcore?

this isnt hardcore. it is metalcore in which vocal range is relatively important.

Killswitch Engage's last two albums have been pretty sub par I agree but The End Of The Heartache was superb so not quite.
Agree with a lot of those, they were good enough to get by without a range for a number of reasons. However both the vocalist
on Malice and this lacked range they weren't great vocalists in my opinion. In modern day
metalcore when everything has been done over and over, there is a greater emphasis on better vocalists. Also as you say
metalcore is a
subgenre of hardcore, it is also a sub genre of metal which has a vast amount of vocalists with range.

point taken. I still prefer vocalists with range.

Problem with that is the vocalists all too often fall into cliched styles to expand their range, e.g. super low gutturals then high raspy bs like you'd hear in deathcore (ABRB, Veil of Maya, etc. etc.).
Honestly, (maybe just because I'm a guitarist and percussionist) I always enjoyed Mis Sigs for the outstanding instrumental work; the vocals more or less took a back seat where consistency and lyrics were key rather than being the center of attention as much.

I can say that the production on Controller, made it get stale, quite fast.
But I think the production, on few tracks, not the full thing, is really epic, but not over the top.
Like the first time I heard The Failsafe, I was blown away.

^Same here, I still get chills from it.
I definitely see what you mean about Karl's vocals getting a little robotic, but honestly in some parts (first two songs mostly) it's because of the phrasing more than the delivery. As far as being emotive goes, I feel like the singing goes a long way towards addressing that; honestly this is one of very very few occasions where I felt that singing in metalcore fit exceptionally well with the songs and added to it. Not to mention he nails it live

Love the drumming in this album. Don't feel they are quite as strong on Controller.

"One Day I'll Stay Home" is the best song on this cd, and maybe my favorite song ever of theirs
