This is a very enjoyable album as long as you don't expect In Rock or Machine Head material.

Hey, this is a great album. So what if Ritchie wasn't a part of it; he was to busy being a prima donna. The guys forged ahead bravely and took a chance. Many fans say it didn't pay off, but this is a true gem in their collection. "Lady Luck", "Dealer", "You Keep on Moving"... hell, those songs were worth the price of admission... period. Yes, there were some funk elements, but no more than Stormbringer. Glenn Hughes brought that element to the table. Just enjoy it for what it is... a great album. And as always, Coverdale rules... yes, he does.

Coverdale rules, agreed.

Agree with all the above statements. Tempted to 4 this.

I know some may disagree, but if you think about it, MKIV was a stupidly good line-up, maybe as much as MKII, but drugs and internal problems fuck them up

Mk. IV was an incredible line-up agreed. People seem to think of Bolin as an inferior guitarist to Blackmore which isn't the case at all. Bolin was one of the most gifted guitarists of his time, although admittedly he doesn't really show it on this album.
I still think this is a really good album. Bolin still puts in a pretty good performance even if it doesn't come close to reaching the heights of his playing outside of Purple. The song writing is decent throughout imo, with Bolin being allowed to put his stamp on the songs, which did contribute to the band moving further away from their signature sound. I think if this wasn't released under the Deep Purple name it would be much more highly praised than it is.

All in all, this is a great album. You Keep on Moving is by far the best track here.

Hell yeah.

EXCELLENT album! Love it to pieces. And despite the song's terrible title, I wish there was a version of 'I Need Love' with a much, much, much longer outro.

This is alright. A pretty big step down from Stormbringer though

I don't enjoy it as much as Stormbringer but I can't say it's very inferior either. There are 3-4 really great songs and You Keep on Moving is incredible.

This is about as good as Stormbringer imo.
Album has one of Bolin's weakest studio performances but his guitar playing is still awesome.
|
| |
It just lacks the standouts Stormbringer had imo. Gettin' Tighter fucking rules however
|
| |
I dunno man, there's plenty of songs on here that aren't that far behind the standouts from Stormbringer.
One of the only things that Stormbringer has over this is the vocal interplay between Hughes and Coverdale imo. And perhaps the fact the two bookends are DP classics.
|
| |
Yeah I wish Hughes sang more on here
|
| |
I think if you look at this as a collaboration between Deep Purple and Tommy Bolin (and not so much a straight-up DP album) it's a really fucking good 70's rock album.
Bolin played a surprisingly big role on this album being one of the lead songwriters on almost ever track, so his stamp is all over it.

I don't think Hughes could have played a bigger role on this one though considering that he had a huge problem with drugs at the time.
|
| |
True, but from what I've heard Bolin was pretty much just as bad at the time and he's right at the forefront of everything (except You Keep On Moving).

That funky jam in Gettin Tighter is the shit

Funny how this, PG, and Sabotage were released the same year. So we can say that, by 1975, the Unholy Trinity's reign was mostly over.
