there are certain themes present in some lyrics and some musical styles that kind of have a progression or maturation as you move through the discog (more sombre lyrics, more steady and calculated musical backdrop) but it seems more to me like something people have projected onto them rather than a conscious decision by the band themselves
just the natural process of ageing i guess
