"People are overreacting about the lack of guitar."
I think it's more of the idea that the quality guitar playing is gone and replaced with things that are lacking significantly in the quality department. There is a massive shift between a sound that was entirely unique to Muse to a more genericized, pop-minded sound. I'm totally down with bands changing style and growing and evolving; in fact it's the mark of a good band...but these songs are just as expansive as older ones, but empty inside.

They took a turn towards mainstream, generic music on Black Holes so why are people surprised at this piece of shit

8 of 11 songs on The Resistance are great. 8 of 11 songs on OoS are great. The only difference, is less guitar. So, that means less guitar = worse album. I guess this album is just representative of the fact that Bellamy always wanted to be a classical musician and not a rock musician.

Pretty bad review, I don't get how a new writing style and overproduction would make this record average. Matt's obviously the best songwriter in the band so it's only natural that he, however pompously takes over those duties. This is a lot better than you make it out to be and I've only heard what they're streaming on their website.

If anything this album has just made me appreciate the old Muse better.
Long live Origin and Absolution.
And good review.

No, there's 3-4 good ones, 3 great ones, and a bunch of indulgent pomposity. You're telling me "Undisclosed Desires" or "I Belong To You" or "Guiding Light" can stand up to "New Born", "Plug In Baby", "Citizen Erased", "Bliss", "Microcuts", "Space Dementia" - shit I'll even go for a b-side - "Yes Please"? Tha fuck outtttta here! Whereas OOS melded hard-edge rock with great instrumentation, awesome symphonic parts and inventive songwriting, this album is pretty goddamn bland, far too glossy with production to the point that it sounds more like a product than an album, their fucking GREAT rhythm section is completely pushed to the back of the mix, lyrics are horrible (they were never great but they hit a new low here) and yes, the fact that Bellamy hardly plays any guitar in what is mainly a guitar-based band (considering he's one of the most inventive guitarists of the last few years) means this album, while good compared to a lot of other bands' work, fucking eats it compared to all of their other records.
