John: 'tis true, good point. But i still say the music is just as inaccessible as always. They used to make complex, intricate rock...and now they make complex, intricate pop. Doesn't seem like they'll win over that many of their detractors just because of the genre change. TMV "haters" wanted the band to make simpler, catchier, more accessible rock; they didn't necessarily want them to mellow out.

I don't think their music is really that inaccessible, if it was their albums wouldn't always be charting in the top 10 and they wouldn't have won a Grammy. I always just assumed that most of the people who actively hated TMV were At the Drive-In fans who are still pissed that that band split and want more screaming and songs shorter than three minutes long. I don't think those people will ever get the album they want.

No they definitely won't. i don't think there are very many of those people though. There are however plenty of alternative rock fans who would get into TMV if they made their rock a bit more mainstream.

Well this album should appeal to some of them at least, it's certainly more restrained and easier to digest than the other Mars Volta albums.

Possibly. Although unfortunately, from looking at their myspace page comments when the album was leaked, the album appears to be alienating more old fans than it is bringing in new ones.

Waior I personally would go in this order if you are a new volta listener

Octahedron>Deloused>Frances>Bedlam>Amp

Amp is probably the hardest to enjoy as a first time listener but Octa and Deloused are probably the most user friendly

I think you're only fooling yourself if you start with Octa, since its so different from their other stuff.

I would start with Deloused --> Bedlam --> Octa --> Frances --> Amp

Deloused is the only place to start, no question.
I would just listen chronologically.

Waior...start with Relationship of Command by atd-i (with bonus tracks and covers because4 it's a nice segue to the mars volta sound)...then move to de-loused...followed by bedlam, this, amp, and finish with the best (francis...but no pussy-ass version, listen to the version with the title track in the beginning because it's probably their best song...)

Seriously, though, how in the fuck could I forget about it? I feel like hitting myself in the head or something. Stupid Kris. It's like their best song.

The word epic is used far too often these days, and a lot of times where it doesn't really apply, but that's the only word that can describe the final riff from Frances.
