Not trying to hate but can someone please explain the mass appeal of this album? Review doesn't really mention much

Basically it was the first album to actually be constructed as one whole piece, as opposed to a collection of singles and filler tracks

It redefined pop music by using tons of different instruments not typically found in a rock or pop song

And it's fucking beautiful so listen to it

Album came out in '66. Up until that point, rock/pop music was very formulaic. Pet Sounds was a dramatic break from the music norms at the time, songs like Wouldn't It Be Nice and God Only Knows were fresh.

It is considered on of the earliest "progressive" works in modern music in terms of breaking away from the standard. Lots of music leading up to Pet Sounds were friendly radio tunes and easy listening. Pet sounds is one of the first records where people wanted to listen intently to the music, the lyrics, their meaning, the different instrumentation, etc.

Music was truly becoming an art form and not just a charade. Pet Sounds would go on to heavily influence The Beatles as well as other countless artists.

" The group here reached a whole new level in terms of both composition and production, layering tracks upon tracks of vocals and instruments to create a richly symphonic sound. Conventional keyboards and guitars were combined with exotic touches of orchestrated strings, bicycle bells, buzzing organs, harpsichords, flutes, Theremin, Hawaiian-sounding string instruments, Coca-Cola cans, barking dogs, and more. It wouldn't have been a classic without great songs, and this has some of the group's most stunning melodies, as well as lyrical themes which evoke both the intensity of newly born love affairs and the disappointment of failed romance (add in some general statements about loss of innocence and modern-day confusion as well)."

The production is magnificent - this is full of different sounds, shades and colors, and all of those elements fit beautifully to the songs they are in. This sounds still fresh and pretty unique today. The songwriting is top notch with beautiful harmonies (the chord progressions and melodies are great, but the harmonies are just incredible at times) and surprising twists. This has an incredible attention to detail throughout.

To sum it up: these are beautiful, simple pop songs expanded into mini-symphonies. And it doesn't even sound forced

My comments were obviously in the context of 60's mainstream music, don't think I need to explicitly state that.

@Torontonian Sure thing. I'll try to make it brief:

1. Instrumentation/production: Spector-like techniques taken to the limit brings in as many instruments into the studio as possible. It's got bells, horns, flutes, electro-theremins...No skimping productionwise. The combination of instruments also made unique sounds (in mono especially). Like what instrument plays the intro of Wouldn't It Be Nice? It's fun trying to pick it out.

2. Story: In a world when many musicians are accused of selling out and fans are disappointed, its astonishing when a band that had it all based on surf pop and a predictable upbeat sound drastically changes their approach regardless of commercial trends. It's definitely got that "one man against all odds" theme in the lyrics and in the album's back story.

3. Songwriting: This is the most important part right here. Brian Wilson is unanimously considered a genius primarily because of this album, which is only because even stripped of all the bells and theremins, these songs rule. Lyrics fit the melancholy of songs with some of the most modern yet beautiful harmonies in pop at the time and now. Check the chords on "Don't Talk" an "God Only Knows" and you'll see Wilson's use of key changes and emotionally effective dissonance is Romantic composer level.

4. Consitency: For me it's definitely an album that gets more impactful with repeated listens. Anyone of these songs can hit home on a given day.

5. Historic importance: Obviously it's been very influential, but keep in mind this also one of the most pivotal years in rock. Along with The Beatles, this pretty much set the tone for what makes a complete and unified pop/rock album. It didn't have to be pop or art; rather, it could be both.

so yeah hope that helps. As you see, Pet Sounds fans are vigilant and fervent about this stuff lol
