This sounds pretty good so far. I don't often listen to female vocalists, but this might become an exception. Going to listen more The Gathering if the whole album continues to entertain. How To Measure a Planet? is supposedly very good...

That's a monster of an album though, I wouldn't start there. I recommend starting with Mandylion and just going in order from that.

While I'm glad that they've been able to keep things going, I wouldn't agree that Silje is on par with Anneke (and certainly not better). She IS good, though, and a much better replacement than some singer replacements we've seen recently (*cough* Nightwish *cough).
I could see them maybe doing one or two more albums before calling it quits, but there's no chance that the "Silje" years will rival the Anneke years. Heck, you could even argue that the departure of their original bassist was the start of it, as he was a big contributor song-writing wise. This Message Edited On 05.12.09

Heck, you could even argue that the departure of their original bassist was the start of it, as he was a big contributor song-writing wise. That is something that I've felt for awhile. I've actually thought that their sound has suffered slightly ever since they dropped the second guitarist. It gave them a less-full sound.
Silje isn't as unique as Anneke but she is just as good. Her voice is smoother and I can see her being around for just as long as Anneke was.

Twelve years is an awful long time, I'm not quite as optimistic, but I agree that the bassist leaving had the biggest effect on the band. Didn't the second guitarist leave after Nighttime Birds? That change probably drew them away from metal, but HTMaP? and Souvenirs had a pretty dense sound I think.

Yeah, 12 years is long but their style isn't so intense that they couldn't play it for another 12 years.
He did go after Nighttime Birds but it still felt like a thinner sound and their Noise Severe album really suffered.

I agree with Willie on the fact that Silje has a more appealing voice, a friend of mine did not even give this album or her voice a chance purely because she was placed further away in the mix.
Whilst Anneke has a more consistent record on picking up melody in a song one has to remember she was not always as good as she is now (Mandylion and Nighttime Birds were great records but they both stumbled in parts) The West Pole suffers from the exact same thing, its songs become a tad warrant towards the end (I'm loving No One Spoke though)
Silje has a much smoother and naturally ethereal voice, it suits the West Poles sound extremely well and judging from this rebirth The Gathering are going to be stronger than ever.

That's exactly why I think they're going to be around a lot longer now. I think if they had kept Anneke and stayed on the path that they were headed that they had one or two more albums, tops.

87% of his chart is metal/black metal/death metal so I'm not surprised.

I thought Home was rather hit or miss. So, I didn't get this until last week ! Glad that I did. The band sounds more energized.
