I brought that up because that riff would sound funny to me too if I'd just hear someone play it, but I think it really works in the context of the song. if we're talking just riff-wise: yeah it is kinda funny and probably the worst riff in the song.

my favorite moment is that clean gothic section leading up to Mike screaming GOOOOOOD for 15 seconds and then that sweet lead that follows ugh it's beautiful

Morningrise suffered less from the "it sounds like you just recorded a bunch of riffs and pasted them onto each other for ten minutes and called it a song"-syndrome, but the production still irked me. Right direction tho! Kinda wished they'd tried it again before stripping down for MAYH even though I like that one a lot.

My main issue with Morningrise is that the band didn't really seem to know when too much was too much and some parts drag on longer than they should and overall it sounds a little bloated.

But not to the point where it detracts enough from giving it a hard 4/5

nah salad implies a mixing of elements (tossing), whereas Orchid was more like a human centipede.

Orchid DID have a mixing of elements though, it just wasn't as well executed as other Opeth. Like they decided to mix pickles with chocolate sauce and left it out in the sun too long

Exactly this, what saves it is the fact that it has so many insanely good sections I can't help but think of it as amazing overall.
