Great post, I totally agree.

It's not harsh. I'm not personally attacking them as human beings or even as musicians, but I am saying that about 80% of the album is awful for the reasons outlined.
I appreciate the fact that you're bringing up material from six years ago, but that was six years ago. I'm hoping just as much as the next person that their 2009 release is going to be in the TEOATTC vein, as is supposedly the case, but we'll all find out together. I'm still looking forward to it regardless of my mostly negative feelings on this album.

I had high hopes for this band ever since I bought L.D. 50, but sadly my hopes are in an elevator going down stuck listening to crappy elevator music which is The New Game.

Jom, your review is AWESOME. I went on the net to see if anyone felt the same as I about this album, and I found your review where you said everything. With this album, I have become less of a Mudvayne fan, yet I have found JOM, and am now a fan.
Mudvayne has (supposedly) always liked to ponder deep things about life, like loss and the role loss plays in life, and so forth, so the above situation is actually most appropriate in my book.
Maybe they can ponder how they now suck and are losing fans, as just one of life's "evolutions" (they're big on evolutions, too)? Actually, when I listened to the record, not only did I feel like dying, but I wondered if this indeed was the point Mudvayne is trying to convey with "The New Game" i.e. that sooner or later, one gets old, usually gets lonlier and dies? This wouldn't have been an unclever point to make (and then dissolve the band altogether), but the awful murder story killed the possibility of this approach. They're actually serious!

L.D.50 is an essential, and Teoattc is hit or miss for lots of people, but I love it.

yeah it looks like like ld 50 is the way to go. i'll start there

ok to all you so called critics giving this record poor reviews need to get ur head out of your ass and clear the shit from your eyes and ears. This is def a slight change from a record like LD 50 but its also def got the classic mudvayne sound that makes them the band they are. All of you who want them to keep remaking DIG after 4 albums need to get the fuck over it. dig is a great song but a true band needs to evolve and expand its sound and mudvayne have done that with this record. If you think this album sucks then its only because you cant see this band for what it is. This a another great album by a great band and this is just a taste of what they have recorded. For those who dont know they will be releasing another full lenth record in about 6 months which is more material from there last round in the studio. So contrary to what some think Tribbett and Gray didnt concentrate soley on hell yeah. I just saw them play at the HOB in A.C. NJ and they tore the house down. This is a progressive step and I for one am looking forward to more.

Look dude, the reason this record gets reviews saying it's s*** is not because it's not another album like L.D. 50. It's because, well, it is s***.

Right. "Dig" isn't even that great of a song. It's got a stellar groove courtesy of the rhythm section, but otherwise, it's a forgettable song. This entire RECORD is full of forgettable songs. You could play a five-second clip of ANY riff on this album and I probably couldn't tell you where in the song it occurred. From L.D. 50 through L&F, you could play a five-second clip and I could tell you the song the riff came from, and in most cases, precisely where the riff occurred in that song. There are really only two stand-out tracks on this album, and the only reason why they stand out is because they're not horrible.
