One of the best black metal albums period.

Without Euronymous there is no Mayhem. This isn't your average black metal with forgettable blistering tremolo picking. Euronymous wrote some very creative guitar riffs and inventive melodies on this record of varying speeds. He even delivers a very moody solo on Freezing Moon.

The drumming on this record is brilliant and it's some of the best you will hear in black metal. Hellhamer is incredible on every track and is very creative with his kit. He really showcases his talent on Buried By Time And Dust and Pagan Fears.

Now some people don't like Attila's operatic-like vocals but they can fuck right off. No other vocalist could give a better delivery on a track like Cursed In Eternity. Attila sounds like a batshit lunatic and his shrieks are awesome on the title track. Without Attila wailing, this record wouldn't be nearly as good.

The production on the album is excellent. Every instrument and the vocals will pierce your eardrums. No shitty thin guitars or overpowering keyboards burying other instruments into the mix on this album. Even the bass by Varg is prominent on tracks such as Pagan Fears. The atmosphere is incredible and it just gets darker as you go on. No need for that bullshit excuse of horrible fuzzy production to make 'atmosphere.'

Cold, dark, and brutal is what this record is. The legacy of Euronymous and Dead.

Mayhem is totes influential but that scene was full of like minded individuals just like him (Euronymous). Too much emphasis
is put on them as founders of second wave black metal

I can't stand this band, or this album. How this is seen as a classic is beyond me.

cause music taste is subjective

and this was fairly influential, so it's not just because it's necessarily that good

The only reason this is seen as a classic is because of the controversies that surrounded the band
members. Their music in general is pretty average and unoriginal, even though they're usually given
credit for pioneering a genre.

Think about this: this album took them seven years to write and record. Seven years for seven mediocre
songs and one great one. They were not talented songwriters. It was all hype.

Pretty much summed up my thoughts perfectly.

I can say the exact same thing about DEP and Calculating Infinity. Music taste is subjective.

Of course it's subjective. I'll never understand why people feel the need to point that out on a music review website. The reason we're here is to share our opinions on music.
