Deathcrush is really good too, but I think this is better. The vocalist actually makes this better for me.

Check out some more shit then. If you like this then you'll definitely like most of the early black metal releases.

I'm not a huge fan of trve kvlt black metal, but from the little I heard I think this is the best, together with Burzum's self-titled. I saw a live performance of Freezing Moon on youtube..I REALLY want to see it >

I'm sorry people, but this album really isn't anything you're allowed to think freely about. It is timeless, influential and simply brilliant, and saying otherwise under the deceitful guise of free speech is a dirty, filthy lie.
As for people who know anything about black metal, their complaint about the album is that it doesn't have Dead. Yeah, well, Dead was dead, and he couldn't sing, sorry. Attila does more than a commendable job here, and after all, Dead's true talent lay in his absolute insanity, which gave his growling that extra edge. Insanity can only go so far.

I really don't know why everyone complains about Dead not being the vocalist. Like you said, he was dead anyways. I know he was a good vocalist, but he really wasn't the god that people made him out to be IMO. Aft first I hated Attila's vocals, but they eventually grew on me.

lol, it's not nearly as influential as most people would have you believe. It came out in '94 for christ's sakes - the majority of important black metal albums were released well before this was. Sure, it probably influenced about 500 Norwegian and Swedish bands that sold about 5 copies of their albums each, but who cares about them?
I know black metal fairly well, I think, and I certainly don't mind the vocalist. In fact I'd say Attila's mad-goblin-squeal was the perfect choice to play along with the music's juxtaposition of darkness and melody.
TheFlightOfTheNazgul: Listen to Tormentor's 'Anno Domini' for music where Attila is at his vocal prime. This Message Edited On 02.10.09

this sure is classic. somebody might think this is considered to be a classic because of its effect to the black metal but I think the music also deserves to be a classic. All tracks are just so good. This Message Edited On 02.11.09

It's definitely a classic, yes. The music is excellent. But it wasn't very influential to BM as a movement.

One of my first 'true' black metal albums along with Nattens Madrigal. Only thing I don't like about it is the vocals are kind of weird. I've only listened to it once though, so I'm sure they'll grow on me

Theres a band called Blood Of The Black owl do the same or similar vocals but i like it but I guess the flutes and folkish blackened drone doom is a more suitable environment.

shaman vocals suck, period

I love this the more I listen to it.

There's nothing evil or sinister about those vocals - they sound like some kid trying to sound creepy - which is probably accurate. They are also mixed way too hot for what they are. Maybe if they were distorted with tons of reverb in the background it would fit with the music better. As it is - his moaning through the titled track pisses me off everytime.
Musically this is inspired, but the vocals are just too awful to look beyond.
